Until recently, western medical research has been inconclusive in determining whether or not there is real benefit for an asthmatic to conduct breathing exercises as part of an overall asthma management program. These exercises have certainly been popular in many alternative type asthma management programs but have not yet been embraced by allopathic, or traditional western physicians.

But they are beneficial and will help an asthma sufferer reduce symptoms and increase strength.

The two most often practiced techniques are Buteyko (named after the Russian doctor who developed them) and a yoga training technique known as pranayama. In very simple terms, Buteyko exercises involve breathing through the nose (not mouth), exhaling for as long as possible and then holding the breath as long as possible at the end of the exhale. During the inhale, a series of short, but shallow breaths are practiced. Pranayama is about correct posture, relaxation and controlled, slow inhalation and exhalation, with a focus on using the diaphragm muscles to assist with breathing.

While breathing techniques have long been supported by naturopathic physicians, it is only in the last several years that the allopathic medical community (traditional doctors) has moved to try and quantify any potential benefit from these exercises. One study, published in the March 2004 edition of Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine concluded there might be some benefit, although more study was required.

In several patient groups (some using buteyko training and others using pranayana), there did appear to be reduced asthma symptoms although lung function did not appreciably change (as measured by PEFR). Nevertheless, patients felt better and did experience a reduction in need for relief medications.

How do breathing exercises help asthmatics

Since asthma is related to inflammation of the lungs and constriction of the smooth involuntary bronchiole muscles, how can doing breathing exercises help alleviate symptoms?

For starters, it is estimated that some 30% of asthmatics suffer some degree of breathing dysfunction. Bad habits are easily learned when suffering from asthma symptoms and it is not uncommon for those habits to continue in between attacks - breathing through the mouth and short, shallow breaths for example.

This type of breathing deprives the lungs of their full potential to effectively exchange oxygen with carbon dioxide. Breathing exercises enforce good habits where the full range of lung function is used. Consequently, the body gets the oxygen it needs and the chronic asthmatic feels better, with more energy.

And not only will it make the breathing process more efficient, there is evidence that breathing muscles (diaphragm and lung muscles) are strengthened. So even if breath training doesn't directly improve lung function, eliminating bad habits will improve overall health and quality of life. And this new energy level is important in getting stronger and finding the motivation to attack asthma with a total management plan that results in symptoms being completely controlled with very little, if any need for medications.

In addition to increased energy levels and stronger lung muscles, there is another benefit to breathing exercises even if it doesn't directly result in increased lung function. And that is when actually enduring an asthma attack.

Anyone who has asthma knows what it is like to struggle for breath. You cant get enough air into your lungs and just as agonizing, you cant seem to get any air out. Asthmatics who practice correct breathing exercises are much more likely to be able to endure, in a controlled manner, an asthma attack than those that dont.

Of course that is not to say that controlled breathing replaces relief medication it most certainly doesn't. But it does contribute, in a real way, to stabilizing the attack because the asthmatic can fight the temptation to start breathing in an uncontrolled manner. Indeed, biofeedback, a technique in which patients are trained to basically will themselves to breath more efficiently, seems to be getting more and more traction.

Controlling asthma cannot be achieved by only using one tool. Multiple tools should be used in addition to the control and relief medications prescribed by your physician. Diet, exercise, trigger controls are all essential components; and so is a good and consistent program of breathing exercises. Using all of these tools will allow an asthmatic to completely control her disease and enjoy a symptom free lifestyle.

Hot wing sauces impart a characteristic spicy, tangy flavor to the dishes they grace. These sauces feature in a wide variety of dishes and hold a pride of place in almost all cuisines of the world. Hot wing sauce is a type of hot sauce that accompanies barbecue or grilled chicken wing. The hot wing sauce is a celebrity of sorts amongst the different types of hot sauces that are in vogue.

Hot wing sauces can be poured over meat dishes, used in cooking or as a dipper with fried chicken wing. Thus, hot wing sauces also serve as barbequeue sauces.

The departmental store shelves abound in hot wing sauces manufactured by different companies.

The 357 Extreme Wing Sauce claims to be the world's hottest wing sauce. Don't be deceived by its silken texture for the chipotle chili peppers contained in it promises to ignite your taste buds up in flames. For those who would prefer more sobriety, the Extreme Wing Sauce can be mellowed with a dash of any other lighter sauce.

Vying for the top slot as the hottest hot wing sauce is the Anchor Bar Suicidal Wing Sauce. The name itself is awe-inspiring and truly so. For this hot sauce, with its fiery taste, merits a statutory warning on its packaging.

For those not so adventurous with their hot sauce, Jim Beam Kentucky Bourbon Wing Sauce will be an excellent option. It is a smooth mixture of cayenne and red peppers, Kentucky bourbon and spices. It packs in just enough heat to tickle your taste buds without setting them on fire.

The Hooters 3 Mile Island Wing Sauce, a product of the Hooters lineage is a versatile sauce which complements a wide variety of dishes like seafood, chops and meats.

However, the top of the picks is undoubtedly the hot wing sauce that comes from the Wing-Time stable. Their hot wing sauces are something that even the most fastidious health freaks would find hard to resist. Though in essence it is a hot wing barbecue sauce, the Wing-time hot sauce is devoid of sugar, cholesterol and Monosodium Glutamine (MSG).

The pedigree amongst the hot wing sauces is the Buffalo wing sauces. They are the finest that is available in the market and are manufactured pursuing the stringent quality control measures.

Sumptuous hot wing sauce can be prepared at home too.

For Buffalo Chicken Wing Sauce, you need cayenne peppers, vinegar, salt to taste, water, onions, garlic, tomatoes, Louisiana sauce, limejuice, honey and ketchup. How hot you like your sauce to be will determine the number of peppers you put in the cooking. The preparation is easy. What matters is whether you will be able to handle it or not.

Whatever be their mode of utilization or preparation, hot wing sauce can transform even the blandest dishes into lip-smacking tongue-licking gastronomical treats fit for a kings palette.

To suffer from acne? This affliction can be a rather tumultuous one if you don't seek to proper treatment. The way we look, as we all know, has a huge effect on our confidence, or lack there of. So how does your complexion look? You are certainly not alone can happen to have acne, but it isn't the end of the world by any means either. It's time to stand up straight and tall, and take control of your life. With the numerous resources at our beck and call, there's absolutely no reason why we can't push to be acne free. While proper skin care and reliable treatments are essential in eradicating blemishes, a great many individuals overlook the other things. It's not just about what's on an outside ladies and gentlemen. We have to consider what goes on inside us as well. What we're talking about here are acne diets. What are you eating?

You may not even be familiar with the subject of acne diets, it isn't talked about too much. This pertains to what you consume and how it affects your skin. I remember couple years ago sitting in the doctor's office in with my lovely wife is there because she was heading back pain. I had really chapped lips at the time and asked her if she had any Chapstick in her purse. This caught the doctor's attention when she looked at me and said, "You know, the condition of your lips actually relates to your diet." Huh? She told me that eating the right nutrients and drinking the right fluids on a regular basis would fully heal my left and and keep them from becoming chapped. This astounded me.

However, since then I have started to heat and more healthy they can guess what... I rarely have chapped lips anymore. It's bizarre how some things work. I guess those doctors to actually know what they're talking about. Anyhow, this premise also applies to our skin. Did you know that the food you eat excretes back through your pores? Sounds weird doesn't? Well, certain substances from the foods do actually make their way out of our pores. This gives whole new meaning to the phrase, you are what you eat. This is precisely why acne diets are so vitally important for some individuals. Foods high in fat and grease have been proven to cause blemishes. I'm talking about fast foods, specifically.

When it comes to acne diets, foods that are great for your skin include, fruits and vegetables, organic products, non-processed items, and of course water, drink lots of water. I highly recommend that you give acne diets a chance if blemishes are haunting you. You should definitely improve your complexion if you give it a fair shot. For more information on acne diets, jump on the Internet where there's more information than you can handle.

There are many different treatments for arthritis. If you are interested in trying some alternative forms of therapy, try acupuncture arthritis knee ankle pain. Acupuncture can be a very effective method of treatment for all forms of arthritis pain, including rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. It has been shown by scientific studies to be particularly effective when it comes to knee and ankle based pain.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical procedure in which certain points of the body are stimulated. American acupuncture incorporates a number of different cultures processes. Health Guru : Description of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Webmaster | 23. September 2007 @ 16:02

The description of irritable bowel syndrome typically used by doctors evaluating patient symptoms is pain or discomfort in the abdomen that is relieved by a bowel movement, changes in frequency or appearance of the stool and bloating or gas. These symptoms can be associated with other digestive disorders, some which are more serious, so even if your symptoms fit the description of irritable bowel syndrome, it is important to discuss them with your doctor. The specific causes of irritable bowel syndrome are unknown, but it affects an estimated one out of every five people at some point in their lives.

The possible causes of irritable bowel syndrome differ depending on whether the pain or discomfort is accompanied by diarrhea or constipation. Treatment plans vary as well. Too much fiber in the diet may lead to diarrhea and some people may be overly sensitive to certain types of fiber. Too little fiber in the diet may lead to constipation. Everyone experiences diarrhea or loose stools and constipation at times, but people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome experience frequent or chronic abdominal pain that is associated with changes in the frequency of bowel movements.

The description of irritable bowel syndrome used by physicians will include either constipation or diarrhea, in other words, the diagnosis will read IBS with constipation or IBS with diarrhea. In some cases, people experience both at different times, that is to say sometimes they have pain that is followed by diarrhea and sometimes they have pain that is accompanied by constipation.

The number of times that a person needs to move their bowels varies. Some may have a movement two or three times per day and others only two or three times per week. As previously mentioned, it is a change in frequency of movements that fits the description of irritable bowel syndrome. Women suffer from IBS more frequently than men and, because of this; it is believed that monthly hormonal changes may be possible causes of irritable bowel syndrome in women.

Other possible causes of irritable bowel syndrome include food allergies or sensitivities, enzyme deficiencies, imbalance of bacteria in the intestinal tract and stress. Some say that stress is definitely not one of the causes of irritable bowel syndrome, but many people who suffer from IBS suffer from anxiety, stress or other emotional issues, as well. In addition, studies have shown that stress management, behavioral and hypnotic therapies can all relieve some or all of the symptoms included in the description of irritable bowel syndrome. These therapies have been effective in both IBS with diarrhea and IBS with constipation.

Health Guru : Teeth Bleaching Facts
Webmaster | 22. September 2007 @ 16:02

Unlike whitening toothpastes, which only remove surface stains to reveal the underlying whiteness of teeth, bleaching agents actually make teeth whiter.

The most common teeth bleaching agents are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.

The effectiveness of teeth bleaching depends on the color of your teeth. Bleaching works best for yellow stains, while gray teeth, which can result from certain antibiotics, are much harder to whiten.People who have stains from smoking, red wine or coffee can get very good results with teeth whitening.

There are two different ways to get whiter teeth:dental (in-office) whitening, and using a home bleaching kit available through a dentist.

A dentist applies a whitening gel, containing a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide, to your teeth, which is then activated by a special blue high intensity light or laser, causing the gel to release the oxygen molecules. The laser merely activates the bleaching gel,it doesn't actually penetrate the teeth.

The results depend on the shade of your teeth before bleaching.

While in-office teeth bleaching is the safest route to go, home teeth bleaching can be also be safe, and effective,if done properly and under the supervision of a dentist.

Tray teeth whitening technique involves the use of a plastic tray that is filled with bleaching gel and then fitted over your teeth.By keeping the bleaching gel in contact with your teeth, for the prescribed period of time, your teeth will get whiter.Persons who are using the teeth bleaching products should always ask a dentist for advice.

Increased tooth sensitivity and gum irritation and are the most common side effects of teeth bleaching. Some people even experience extreme pain.Your dentist will advise you on the appropriate steps to take if your teeth become sensitive during the bleaching process.

Although the results of teeth whitening can vary from person to person, most people are very satisfied with their results. But if teeth bleaching isn't working for you or if have teeth that are shaped badly or crooked, veneers may be the option.

Secret Recipes Frittlers Part 2 (Italian Pasties)

Hello a couple months ago I did an article on my families all time favourite secret recipe Frittlers (Italian Pasties). There is 2 ways you can make them one is with oil the other without oil. I love them both ways out of 5 with oil I give it 5 without oil I give it 4.75 still sensational. The article I did 2 months ago was with oil so Ive updated this with the way to do it without oil.

The reason for this without oil is healthier then with oil so if you would like to try it but without oil this is for you. I have them both ways and love them.

Firstly the oil recipe I did 2-3 months ago is below and underneath it is how to do it without oil Secret Recipes Frittlers Part 2 (Italian Pasties).

You are in for a treat. We name the recipe Frittlers (Italian Pasties)

With Oil Secret Recipes Frittlers Part 1 (Italian Pasties)

Ingredients

7g yeast,
1 cup lukewarm water - if need more add extra but don't make it soggy,
3 cups plain flour,
pinch of salt,
pepper,
cheese, not mozzarella cheese but either shredded tasty cheese or shredded plain cheese,
ham,
tomatoes,
tuna (chunk tuna) instead of ham
canola oil

Put flour in bowl make a hole in the centre then add water and yeast mix together with pinch of salt. Work the dough don't make it real dry. Then put in plastic bag, close bag up. Then put in a warm spot such as under blankets somewhere warm for about 1hour to 1.5 hours for it to rise to double its size.

While it's rising get ham and cheese, not mozzarella cheese but either shredded tasty cheese or shredded plain cheese. Cut up ham add cheese then mix together.

Roll out dough to pasty round sizes do one at a time, add ham, cheese and sprinkle of pepper no salt then roll up pasty. When rolled up with filling at the ends with a fork press it and go around the edges. Then prick it lightly with fork twice around the middle.

Continue doing that until finished. Once done put 2 at a time in a frying pan with canola oil so oil covers the whole lot make sure oil is hot. (Just be careful because of heat) Cook to nice gold colour about 4-5 minutes then turn over and do other side. Take them out and put on paper towel to get rid of some of the oil. Can eat them basically straight away or you might wait to they cool down that is up to you.

There is no problems with freezing them they still taste fantastic.

If you want to add tomatoes you can but have it within 24 hours but dont freeze any with tomatoes, what I do is if take them out the freezer when they thaw out I cut in half and add tomato and put in oven or griller.

Can also have chunk tuna instead of ham with the cheese. Tuna and cheese is also okay to freeze.

Also if you like you can add chopped up onion or anything that you enjoy.

Without Oil Secret Recipes Frittlers Part 2 (Italian Pasties)

You do exactly the same as with oil but instead of using oil and cooking them in a frying pan put them in the oven for roughly 10-15 minutes on 200 Degrees Celsius or 400 Degrees Fahrenheit then flip over again for extra 10 minutes and enjoy. (You can put on just a touch of oil on the Frittlers just before putting them in the oven).

This family secret recipe is one your family and friends will really appreciate, bon appetite!

Health Guru : Cooking Tip For Onions and Garlic -- Nana's Secret to Great Flavor, If You Know How
Webmaster | 20. September 2007 @ 16:02

Onions and garlic always add great flavor to most dishes. But let me share with you a cooking technique on preparing them that will greatly enhance the flavor of your meals. Your guests will rave about your cooking.

Many dishes call for onions and garlic in their recipes. You chop them up, saute them for 3 minutes and you are done. This is where, in my opinion, they miss the flavor boat.

When I was younger I would watch my husband's Italian Nana cook spaghetti sauce and a number of other dishes and you know what she would do? She would always, finely chop the onion and slowly saute them in olive oil for about 35 to 40 minutes. It was a fairly slow process, because she would tend to the onions stirring them frequently as they slowly cooked. Eventually the onion would cook down (to almost half of what she started with) and turn a nice golden brown.

When the onion was about done Nana would add minced fresh garlic and saute the whole mixture another 4 or 5 minutes. What a wonderful smell that was. Boy was her spaghetti sauce special and this is why I believe her dishes were so delicious.

So I started using this technique every time I made a dish that called for onion and garlic. You know what? Every time I sauteed the onion slowly in olive oil my dishes were more flavorful. Special if you will.

So now I use this little technique every time I make spaghetti sauce, casseroles, beef stroganoff, taco soup and any other dish that calls for onion and garlic.

Once I made a Pampered Chef casserole with egg, zucchini, onion and garlic and used my little technique. Well let me tell you, that dish disappeared fast with many requests for the recipe. When I made this dish previously without using my onion technique the dish was nothing special.

So if you have the time, and I believe it is definitely worth it, try Nana's tip.

One thing to keep in mind is that the onion cooks down to just about half of what you start with so use double the amount of onion that the recipe calls for. Don't worry if it looks like way to much onion. Once it cooks down, the amount will be just right.

Again, here is all there is to it:

Finely chop up the amount of onion you will need. Pour olive oil into a frying pan. Be generous here. There is no set amount. Say 3 or 4 tablespoons for one onion.

Turn the heat on to medium high. Add the onion stirring frequently, until it is reduced by 1/3 to 1/2. If the onion appears to be cooking too fast, turn the temperature down to low. Just make sure the onion doesn't burn.

When you think it's done (after 35 to 40 minutes), add the minced garlic and cook an additional 4 or 5 minutes.

Now add the onions and garlic to you favorite dish.

Health Guru : Making a Better You By Getting Rid of Anxiety and Panic
Webmaster | 19. September 2007 @ 16:02

Working to become a better you can cut down anxiety and panic attacks. Things that create stress are called stressors. Stressors can happen outside of you or in your mind. For something to be stressful, the event must be threatening to you in some way. Usually a stressor is threatening when it will have a big impact on you. It is important to know that stressors are the leaders of stress, and often target us each and every day.

It is not uncommon that people are the main creator of stressors. They are constantly pulling you away from your daily plans and goals, just to talk, wanting you go out with them, or other disruptive tasks and sometimes chores. Remember that you are working toward a future that you will live and be happy in. Thus, asserting self and standing up and fighting to reach your goals is ultimate in bettering you and getting rid of anxiety and panic.

Taking action is the process of bettering self for a successful future. When you take action, you will find it easier to remove stressors. I could spend a lifetime yelling each time I allowed someone to take control of my life, but instead, I control my own life and have no problem letting anyone know it. Of course, things come up we must deal with that interferes and interrupts our lives, however dealing with it now can put an end to the problem later.

Stressors are nasty little critters that work for us or against us. If you learn to minimize stressors you will have a friend, since when stress steps in, you will rarely feel anxious or panic. Now take the test to find out how you deal with stress.

Test:

Do you place high emphasis on small problems making them bigger? If you answered yes, then you need to check your mind carefully before jumping to conclusions.

Do you often place high importance on insignificant issues? Do you disassociate from inconsequentiality, i.e. do you let the little things go? If you answered yes to one then learn what is important to you. If you said yes to the second question then you are working to better self, since you are not sweating the small stuff.

Asking questions and searching for answers can help you to avoid stressors, overwhelming stress, anxiety and panic. Once you ask questions and seek out answers, you will grow into resourcefulness, which is a healthy state of mind.

Resourcefulness enables you to use ingenuity and imagination while learning inventiveness. You will find originality, which is a high commendable quality that we all seek. In other words, you creative mind will explore possibilities; learn to weigh consequences and so forth, reducing stress, anxiety and panic.

Originality is finding something new in your life and about you. As you develop your imagination, you will soon discover how the mind s eyes work. The step to better you clears the mind, reducing stress on the head and enforcing your thoughts to flow freely. Take the test.

Imagine you in the next few weeks feeling better about self. Imagine self-smiling, feeling good, and not fearing anxiety and panic. Keep going while telling you that from now on I intend to work toward a better me. I am not going to allow stressors, stress, anxiety and panic to control my life. Now, imagine self-doing it, while planning actions and steps to achieve your newfound goal to a better you.

Health Guru : What to do About that High Stress Lifestyle That Could Be Raising Your Blood Pressure
Webmaster | 18. September 2007 @ 16:02

This description of a typical high-stress lifestyle may sound familiar to you... very familiar...

You get up in the morning, and you're running late, so the stress begins before you're even done eating breakfast. You rush off to work, stressing about whether you'll make it to work on time and then stressing about whether you'll get a speeding ticket on the way and end up really late. When you get to work, you're stressing about your job performance, your demanding boss and whether you'll get that promotion. When you're not stressing about your performance at work, you're stressing about your son's performance in school. As you're stressing over the traffic on the way home, you're stressing about your upcoming vacation plans. Finally, you're on your way out the door for vacation, but now you've got airport and flying stress!

It seems like you can't avoid it. Out of the frying pan into the fire, from one stress to the next you go. It may even seem amusing on the surface, all these little things stressing us out, but it's not a laughing matter at all. Getting control over the stress in your life can be a matter of life and death. If you're perpetually stressed and you don't learn what to do about it, you could become a prime candidate for high blood pressure - the silent killer.

Medical experts estimate that 90 percent of Americans will have high blood pressure at some point in their lives. With staggering statistics like this on their minds, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh embarked on a 13-year study to see if early-life stressors impacted someone's future blood pressure levels.

Following more than 5,000 men and women between the ages of 18 and 30, the researchers studied the subjects' cardiovascular activity through a series of rather unusual tests, including submersing the subject's hands in ice cold water and having them engage in stressful video games.

After taking each person's blood pressure, they hypothesized that participants with the highest blood pressure readings would be precursors to high readings later in life. Thirteen years later, when the test results were re-evaluated--you guessed it--a significant number of those same participants had become hypertensive. The study was published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation.

So how do you go about minimizing your tendency towards getting stressed? Is it even possible in today's fast paced, information-overloaded and hectic society? The answer is yes and you're about to learn how.

First, I'd like you to consider the fact that I'm not suggesting that you stop everything you're doing. You don't necessarily have to slow down, you simply need to calm down. With that thought in mind, here are some action steps you can take starting today, which will make a big difference in keeping your stress levels under control, and minimizing the negative effects of stress that cannot be avoided.

(1) Exercise - Besides being good for your body, exercise is good for your brain. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which make us feel happy, and at ease. It also helps to increase the flow of blood in the brain, ridding the mind of waste products that develop in the course of stressful times when mental processes are in excess. Furthermore, the more fit you are, the more you're able to cope with events in life that bring about stress.

I recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of walking most days of the week, gradually increasing to 45 minutes to 1 hour most days of the week. A study published in the December 2005 issue of "Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise" concluded that walking on a treadmill for just 30 minutes can boost your mood and feeling of well-being.

(2) Eat Regularly and Healthfully - Skipping meals is probably the worst thing you can do for your health. Low blood sugar levels that result from skipping meals not only slow down the metabolism but slow down virtually every system in the body. This in turn affects your ability to think clearly and contributes to stressful feelings because of hunger pangs.

Have a healthy breakfast for starters. One of my favorites is one cup of slow cooked oats, (not instant oatmeal which is loaded with preservatives) with banana, blueberries and a tablespoon of lecithin granules (very effective for lowering cholesterol). Avoid processed foods such as bacon and sausage, which are high in fat and lack fiber and nutrients. You should also eat small portions throughout the day. This will keep your metabolic fire burning hot and keep your blood sugar levels stable.

(3) Learn to Meditate - Research indicates that meditating for less than 20 minutes a day is extremely conducive to mental health and minimizing stress levels. The key is finding the time to meditate and then sticking with it once you start. A study published in the journal of Psychosomatic Medicine concluded that a short program in "mindfulness meditation" produced lasting positive changes in both the brain and the function of the immune system. The University of Wisconsin-Madison research team found that meditation, long promoted as a technique to reduce anxiety and stress, might produce important biological effects that improve a person's resiliency.

There are many ways to meditate, but start by finding a serene location, one where there are little to no distractions, where you can separate yourself from the world. Then, just like you see on television or in any other place that illustrates meditation, sit upright with your legs crossed and take long, deep breaths in and out. Focus as much as you can on your breathing and try to not let your mind wander. Be an observer; focus on your inner self.

One of the reasons meditation is so effective at reducing stress is because of the power of breathing properly. Go ahead and try it - right now. Take a long, deep breath through your nose... hold it, hold it.... Then slowly let it out through your mouth, and say to your self, silently, RELAX. Even with that one single breath, you felt a wave of relaxation pass through your body as tension drained away. Now imagine what a session of twenty, fifteen, ten or even just five minutes per day, whatever you can manage, of deep breathing meditation or guided relaxation will do for you.

The benefits of meditation are remarkable and this is not just some mystical Eastern "new age" prattle - the scientific research now proves it. One way to easily get started with a meditation is with hypnosis audios. Did you know that hypnosis sessions begin by using deep breathing to induce a state of deep, deep relaxation? In fact, when you "let go" and let a hypnotherapist guide you through it, whether in person, or more conveniently, by listening to audio, you automatically release tension, reduce stress and reach a deeper state of profound relaxation than any other way.

Obese and Overweight Children
Peter Nisbet | 17. September 2007 @ 16:02

The nutritional requirements of a child have to be considered carefully. Growing children require a high amount of energy intake to help them to grow, but, just as with adults, if energy intake exceeds energy usage, the child will put on weight.

Naturally, children should, and must, gain weight through the natural process of growth, but many children go beyond that and put on excess fatty tissue; i.e. they become obese. Obesity is rapidly becoming a serious problem with today's children, partially through the wrong nutrition and eating too much of the wrong foods, and partially through ignorance on behalf of the parents who have a misconception that "puppy fat" is a healthy and normal thing.

To a certain extent this is true, but excess "puppy fat" is as dangerous to a child as excess fat is to an adult. It is estimated that more than 15% of UK children are overweight or obese, and this figure is rising rapidly. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported on the 4th April that the level of overweight American children was 33.6%. Obese children grow into obese adults. They do not lose this so called "puppy fat" unless positive steps are taken. They have a significantly higher risk of developing serious health problems , both now and as an adult, including potentially life threatening conditions such as bowel cancer, diabetes, strokes, heart conditions and high blood pressure. The more overweight the child, the greater the risk.

There are also psychological problems to consider. Overweight and obese children frequently experience playground teasing about their appearance which can destroy self esteem and confidence, and lead to isolation and depression. This can last for the rest of their lives, and often leads to such children taking up smoking and drinking alcohol at an early age.

It is predicted by health experts that due to our children's poor diet and lack of exercise their own parents will be outliving them. This is a scary thought, is it not. The most exercise many children get is getting out of bed! Many spend their leisure time in front of a computer or games console. School sports are non existent in many schools due the ethos of everyone having to be a winner. Competition in sports is bad because someone must lose. Many school playing fields have been sold off by local councils to developers. How short sighted!

It is very rare for children to be overweight due to health problems. The opposite is true. Children have health problems because they are overweight. Unless diagnosed by a doctor, health problems should not be used by parents as an excuse. Similarly with genetics. Although genetics can play a part, it is only a very small part. Fat parents frequently have fat children, but this is not usually genetic. How about the fact that children mimic the bad eating habits and activity habits of their parents? How often have you seen parents and children living off Big Macs and other fatty convenience foods.

Rather than blame obesity on genetics or health problems parents should look at their childs unhealthy lifestyle. Their lack of exercise and physical activity. It is become easier for children to become overweight. Sweets, convenience meals, fast foods, all full of excess salt and sugar. They are targeted at children through TV advertising. Have you ever sat and watched TV with your child on a Saturday morning and taken note of the adverts? I know there are very good reasons for it these days, but 30 years ago children did not travel to school by car. They walked to school. How many hours does your child spend sitting in front of a TV set or a games console or a computer screen? How much sport do they participate in?

It is relatively easy for adults to determine whether or not they are overweight by working out the Body Mass Index, which is not an appropriate measurement tool for children. Charts taking into account a child's rate of growth, age, gender are used instead. Health professionals are able to measure what proportion of their weight is fat. As a rule, a childs weight is generally classed as obese if the body weight is more that 25% fat in males and 32% fat in females.

Unfortunately far too many children have considerably more body fat then that, and we, as adults and their parents, are failing them. They will not thank us in years to come for failing them in this way. Don't blame the overweight child. Blame the parent, if there is any blame. Some is due to genetics or illness, but only a relatively very small amount.

P.S. As an adjunct to this article you can find a Body Mass Indicator suitable for children and teens, and an extended version of this article, on our website here: http://www.childhood-diseases-online.com/overweight-children.html

Health Guru : Boosting Immune System is One Step Toward Preventing Alzheimer's Disease
Webmaster | 16. September 2007 @ 16:02

Drugs have been used to ease the symptoms of Alzheimers disease and give people a better quality of life. Many such therapies are designed to fight the effects of the build up of amyloid proteins that form a plaque around brain neurons. If only this plaque could be prevented from forming in the first place, people would have a much lower risk of developing Alzheimers disease.

Recent research out of Canada suggests that the bone marrow holds the key to cleansing amyloid plaque from the brain. Microglia derived from the bone marrow is able to attack the most toxic forms of this plaque. The key then is to increase this natural scavenger and get it to release from the bone marrow so it can do its job. This natural defense mechanism is now thought to be triggered by boosting the immune system, according to the trials conducted on laboratory mice.

What are the best ways to boost the immune system and cleanse potentially harmful plaques that could be building up in your brain? A diet that is balanced and full of antioxidants is the primary way. Here are some other tips to getting the best immune system building nutrition and reducing the factors that weaken it.

1. Get Your Essential Fatty Acids. This is the number one immune system builder. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are necessary to optimal health. A fish oil supplement is the best source of fatty acids since American diets dont normally contain enough fish to provide these nutrients.

2. Take Care of Your Lymphatic System. This is the system of organs, nodes, and vessels that help cleanse the body continuously. Using the Chinese herb, Ligustrum (nu zhen zi) increases bone marrow production of lymphocytes and benefits the thymus.

3. Get Enough Exercise. Exercise increases the production of T lymphocyte and reduces stress, both of which support a strong immune system.

4. Look at Your Lifestyle. Drinking alcohol and caffeine and smoking cigarettes all weaken the immune system. Also, excessive stress for long periods of time or not getting enough sleep makes you more susceptible to all kinds of disease.

5. Look at Your Environment. Household cleaners, pesticides, and food additives all suppress the immune system. If there is an abundance of these types of factors in your life, all the good nutrition may not be enough to counteract their impact.

Health Guru : What is fritters? Easy to cook? Ideal for kids?
Webmaster | 15. September 2007 @ 16:02
The old idea behind fritters was to stretch an ingredient like zucchini, corn or clams. You either make a batter — usually with a little egg and baking powder in it for leavening — and mix in bits of the ingredient you’re stretching, or you dip those ingredients into the batter just before frying. Health Guru : Common Cold Symptoms and Facts about Common Cold Treatments
Webmaster | 11. September 2007 @ 16:02
Choosing an effective common cold treatment may be frustrating. Common cold symptoms can vary and finding a product that works to relieve all of your symptoms may be difficult, if not impossible. Busy adults often look for common cold treatments that will relieve their symptoms without making them drowsy, but according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) bed rest is good for you, when you have a cold. In fact, adequate rest is important at all times for maintaining a healthy immune system and general good health.<br /> In addition to bed rest, the NIAID recommends drinking plenty of fluids and gargling with warm salt water as common cold treatments. Scratchy or sore throat may be relieved by using sprays or throat lozenges. Petroleum jelly may relieve a raw nose and using soft tissues or those treated with lotions may be more soothing than regular paper tissue. Another common cold treatment, which the NIAID recommends is aspirin or acetaminophen to relieve headache, fever or body aches. However, research indicates that aspirin use for common cold treatment increases the amount of virus in nasal secretions, meaning that transmitting the virus to others is more likely. Children under the age of 18, should not be given aspirin containing products, due to the risk of Reye's syndrome, a disease that affects all of the organs of the body, can have long-lasting consequences and can lead to brain damage or death in some children. It is advisable to check the ingredients in any common cold treatments before giving them to children. Many antihistamines and decongestants contain small amounts of aspirin or other pain relievers, as do other multi-symptom common cold treatments. The common cold is a viral infection of the lining of the nose. Thus, typical common cold symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose and difficulty breathing through the nose. Coughing usually results from irritation of the throat when nasal fluids drain into the throat. Some of the viruses that cause common cold symptoms may lead to upper respiratory or sinus infections. Blowing the nose forces mucus and bacteria into the sinuses and can lead to bacterial infection of the sinuses. A commonly held myth about common cold treatment is that allowing the nose to run and sneezing to continue will reduce the duration of the infection. This non-treatment increases the likelihood that sinus and upper respiratory bacterial infections will occur. Plus, sneezing, coughing and nasal secretions transmit the viruses to other people. Common cold treatments not only relieve symptoms, but prevent the spread of the virus and reduce the chance of developing complications. Other myths about common cold treatments include "feeding a cold" and inhaling steam to relieve symptoms. While good nutrition is important, there is no evidence that increasing food intake during a cold will relieve symptoms or reduce recovery time. While inhaling steam may temporarily relieve congestion, health experts do not believe that this is an effective common cold treatment. Common cold symptoms may include headache and low fever. The headache results from irritation of the sinuses and stuffy nose. The fever is the bodys reaction to the viral infection. Although doctor visits for common cold treatment are generally unnecessary, colds are one of the leading causes of doctor visits annually. Over the counter products, such as antihistamines, decongestants, cough suppressants and analgesics are usually the only things that a doctor will recommend as common cold treatments. Antibiotics will have no effect on common cold symptoms and will only be prescribed if complications, such as bacterial infection of the ears or sinuses are present. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 million school days are lost each year in the United States due to common cold symptoms. And, often when the kids catch a cold, parents become affected, too, leading to lost days of work, not to mention a week or more of miserable days spent suffering. Since there is no cure for the common cold and the most effective common cold treatments can only reduce symptoms or length of duration, focus must be on prevention. Recent studies support the belief that a poorly functioning immune system increases the likelihood of developing common cold symptoms. People can be exposed to the viruses and never develop symptoms. Clinical research, in which common cold viruses were sprayed directly in the nose, showed that some people never developed symptoms, even though the virus was present. Asthmatics, who have more colds than the average person, produce a lower than average number of anti-viral proteins. Thus, the use of dietary supplements that support healthy immune system function may reduce the likelihood of developing common cold symptoms. Health Guru : How to Get Fast, Effective and Permanent Chronic Back Pain Relief Naturally
Webmaster | 10. September 2007 @ 16:17
Treatment for chronic back pain relief (and other chronic pain relief) is easier, more effective and much more comfortable than you may think. One of the biggest problems with the traditional body manipulation pain relief techniques is that the treatment is done to you, i.e. somebody else manipulates your body to give you relief. Examples of this are massage, chiropracting, and physiotherapy. One of the biggest lessons for me was in realizing that body manipulation therapies do not permanently relieve pain. In fact, it is likely that the more often you go to a body manipulation therapist, the more frequently you will need to return. Why? Well, when your body is treated by somebody else, the results are temporary because you dont learn how to put yourself into that state. The focus is on getting somebody else to 'fix' you so there is no responsibility taken for bringing awareness to your own unconscious patterns or for creating your own healing. I began to realise this fact after years of trying many innovative and established pain relief techniques to relieve my chronic, back, neck and shoulder pain. I discovered that the more dynamic the pain relief technique the more the pain continued. In fact, after years of using 'common' pain relief techniques and getting no permanent relief, I began to become less and less active, eventually hoping to find pain relief just lying around. Although my chronic back, neck and shoulder pain decreased with inactivity, I could still feel areas of immobility, pain, and a lack of energy. This led me on my search for simple and permanent pain relief that I could do myself. After years of research and exploration into self-healing, I began to understand that true comfort and freedom from pain comes from the spirit within. It is only through acknowledging our pain can we truly heal and live a joyous pain-free life. But the question remained, how do we go within when there is so much outer all-consuming chronic body pain? Through trial and error, I found the greatest relief of chronic pain occurred when all parts of my body were simultaneously supported. This meant that all of my body was held in a precise, relaxed position where all joints were centered and all voluntary muscles were disengaged. So I asked myself, 'Where do I remember being the most relaxed and pain-free?' The answer that came to me was: when I was entirely submerged in water. It was basically when I felt weightless! Then I had a moment of revelation. I realized that my body became completely relaxed when underwater because all my joints were centered and all my muscles and fascial sheaths were allowed to rest in their natural length. This allowed my body energy to flow unimpeded (a position we dont often experience with the tension and stresses of day-to-day life). Since I did not relish the lack of oxygen under water or the shriveling of my skin after a period of time in water, I decided to recreate this weightless body position on land. So, after a period of combining cushions to support my body in this 'weightless' position, I eventually developed a solution that provides permanent relief from chronic pain without the need to do anything! The result is actually so profound, that after a few months of use, I no longer needed to use it because I no longer had pain. And the final result? I achieved my goal of finding a way to easily self-heal; where there is no more need to rely on somebody else for your own well-being! How you decide to stay fit and healthy is up to you.

If the thought of bouncing around a gym or workout center in spandex makes you cringe, take heart.

Chair aerobics are designed to give those with mobility problems a good cardio workout without putting strain on the joints and bones.

A chair aerobics session may include kicks, punches and stretches, and often includes the use of workout bands and weights to increase strength and resistance training as the workouts get more intense.

Better heart function, lower blood pressure, increased circulation and heightened alertness, say the experts.

It's the perfect solution if you can't leave your desk or if you work at home and can't get to the gym.

It's also an excellent solution for older Americans who may not be as mobile as they once were, but who can benefit from regular exercise.

According to many recent studies, engaging in moderate exercise three to five times a week can help reduce the risk of heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes and arthritis.

Among the exercise that the American Physical Therapy Association recommends for seniors are golf, gardening, walking, swimming and jogging.

Water fitness classes are among the best aerobics exercises you can do, especially if you suffer from joint stiffness or arthritic pain.

Because you're in the water, there's no impact shock, making water exercises the ideal form of low-impact aerobic exercise.

Health Guru : Enema Or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Constipation Managed With Intestinal Cleansing
Webmaster | 8. September 2007 @ 16:17

Ever had an enema? Do you suffer from constipation? If you suffer from abdominal cramps, bloating and some diarrhea then you might be a sufferer of irritable bowel syndrome. If you are looking for relief, good news

The subtle symptoms creep into our life one at a time until we find a barrage of complications we never had before. Constipation is the most obvious difference, then pain, abdominal cramps and bloating followed with occasional diarrhea, all add up to irritable bowel syndrome.

Our lifestyles have shaped our habits to fit an unnatural pattern of elimination. We eat and rush to work or school, suppressing the natural elimination that should occur within 20 minutes after eating.

Some individuals may wait as long as a week between bowel movements. This only complicates the impaction, toxic build up in the bowel, which comes back into the blood stream as toxic waste, and creates a need for laxatives or enemas.

Enema can be a natural remedy for irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. The early 1900s medical practice was that when a patient was admitted to the hospital for any ailment, the patient first received an enema. A bit messy and inconvenient, enema is usually a last resort. Diet and intestinal cleanse using all natural herbs has become more popular and healthy.

Colon cleanse has become a buzzword as it has been determined that the origin of most disease starts in the colon. The impaction of fecal matter that lines the walls of the colon without being eliminated can easily be 15 pounds. Decay and putrefaction in the bowl throws the immune system in extreme overload, ridding the body of toxins and trying to fight off disease. If the immune system fails, disease grows in the body.

Irritable bowel syndrome can be controlled before permanent damage is done to the colon. Herbal colon cleanse is the most effective on a long-term use. Herbal colon detoxification is also called colon cleanse. High fiber foods in the diet are natural scrubbing agents for the colon to cleanse the cilia that absorb nutrients.

Constipation is not all corrected with a laxative. Drink 5 glasses of water a day. Avoid excess bread and pastry. Augment your diet with foods high in fiber. Choose an intestinal formula supplement that will stimulate the peristaltic action in your bowel and strengthens the colon muscles.

Avoid harsh laxatives that are not all natural. Dependence on over the counter laxatives can lead to weakened elimination muscles and loss of natural body function.

It is claimed that all habits can be learned in 21 days. In the next three weeks try an intestinal herbal formula and make time to eliminate within 30 minutes of eating. Your body is designed to heal itself if you do not override the master plan.

Basic Principles of Nutrition: It is necessary for maintaining the human body in good health because our body is continuously using the substances which make it up and these must be replaced by absorbing food. So, a number of important factors must be considered if the process of alimentation is to be carried out correctly.

Hunger and thirst are sensed automatically by a healthy person.

Appetite is the desire for food without really being hungry. Its mainly psychological. In our psychological stress, we dont have appetite in spite of being hungry.

Variety: We need varieties of different foods and only varied food intake can ensure balanced nutrition.

Digestion: It takes place in the gastrointestinal tract, and is the breakdown of food prior to its absorption into the body.

Health Guru : Physical Therapy For Treating Back Pain
Webmaster | 6. September 2007 @ 16:02

Most doctors who work with patients in treating back pain also actively work with physical therapists. Physical therapists are skilled in helping patients recover from back pain and get back to performing everyday physical activities.

Physical therapists often spend time teaching their patients exercises which help them improve and maintain the health of their spines. There are a variety of popular exercise programs which have been designed to reduce the amount of back pain patients experience.

By using physical therapy, you will learn postures and positions which will help lessen the amount of pain you feel in your back. There is no one approach that will work for everyone. Your physical therapist will design a exercise program which is tailored to your individual needs. There are many different types of exercises available, and you will want to use the exercises which are the most comfortable to you.

Some exercises focus on adding strength to the muscles which assist in arching the spine and back. Patients who have back pain which is a result of ligament tears or other problems with their discs can have the pressure reduced by arching their backs.

Patients may perform other techniques such as lying prone, in which they lay on their stomachs with their arms to their sides for about ten to fifteen minutes. A variation of this technique may be lying prone on pillows in order to support your back. Your physical therapist may also want you to perform press ups, standing extensions, or other techniques.

To perform a standing extension, place your hands on the smaller part of your back while standing. Lean backward and hold this position for twenty seconds before repeating the exercise. To perform a prone press up, you want to lay down on your stomach and place the palms of your hands near your shoulders. Now slowly push your shoulders up, keeping your hips down. Lower yourself down slowly, and repeat.

While physical therapists can teach you a variety of methods to reduce your back pain, it is up to you to apply them. The most important factor in using a physical therapist is making sure you do the exercises they teach you. Consistently sticking to an exercise program in order to improve the health of the spine and back is difficult for many people, but the rewards are worth it. Taking the advice of your physical therapist is critical in you reducing your back pain.

Health Guru : Influenza- Symptoms and Treatment
Webmaster | 5. September 2007 @ 16:02

Influenza is a common contagious disease with flu-like symptoms. Influenza is caused by a sphere or filament-shaped virus. The most problematic part of these viruses is that they keep on changing. Such mutated virus strains can adversely affect a person even though that person had immunity to another strain of the influenza virus. And the situations worsens if separate strains combine. Such a combination can be really fatal as the newly emerged virus gains in its immunity against the extant vaccines.

A person becomes rather weak during the bouts of influenza. The patients immune system also fails to operate naturally. As a result, influenza can turn into another life threatening ailment known as pneumonia. In fact, annually approximately 25,000 American citizens die because of influenza or pneumonia. Medical reports have shown that people above the sexagenarian age group have been fatally affected by this twin disease.

The virus responsible for causing influenza has been classified into three types, viz., A, B and C. While A affects mankind and animals, B and C targets only human beings. Mentionably, the third type of influenza leads to only to mild infection.

The latest panacea for influenza known as the 2004 Influenza Vaccine fights is composed of one strain of B and two strains of A.

Influenza can attack anyone at anytime. However, people are particularly susceptible to influenza during the changes of seasons. During influenza, the main affected area is the respiratory channel. When the weather turns cold from hot or vice versa, many people irrespective of colds do fall prey to influenza. The disease can easily flow from one person to another. The primary routes for its transmission are sneezing and coughing. Influenza can also spread if one uses the clothes particularly the hanky or the towel used by an influenza affected person.

Influenza is accompanied by clogged nose, headache, or at times running nose, temporary pain of joints and running body temperature. Mentionably, influenza and its symptoms disappear within three to four days whether one takes medicines or not. However, influenza can also be a silent stalker. Under such circumstances, it is always advisable to try and cure influenza naturally. If the symptoms continue for a longer period and show little signs of disappearing, do consult a doctor.

The best way to cure influenza is to go for hot foot baths, and gargle if one suffers from sore throat. Many people take a tea spoonful of raw and unadulterated mustard oil to get back the normal voice. If one experiences mild fever, one can simply take the precaution of not bathing in cold water. Keep the body and the feet warm. Using cold ointments on the back side of the body, armpits, feet and on the chest besides around the nostrils also provide relief by means of the strong evaporation of those ointments.

It has also been found that homeopathic treatment is the most ideal strategy to cure influenza. This is especially true with children. Homoeopathic medicines can also be taken by the adults. The homoeopathic treatments give the best results in cases of adults who are teetotalers. Nonetheless, these medicines are cheaper than the allopathic ones. Besides, the homoeopathic medications do have any side effects although they take some time to deliver the goods.

Bird influenza: Nowadays, influenza has taken another deadly form. It is commonly known as the avian influenza as the virus gets transmitted to human beings from birds including poultry( hen, duck, turkey). The cause of this type of influenza has medically proved to be the H5N1 virus. Intensive researches are on to find a viable vaccine for avian influenza. The H5N1 virus has been found to be affecting people mainly in Europe and Asia.

In most of such cases, avian influenza spreads from the avian species to one person. To obviate any possibility of the H5N1 virus spreading to man, one must stay from making any contact with the birds during any avian influenza epidemic.

Symptoms of bird flu in humans can be similar to those resulting from typical flu-like symptoms, like fever, cough, sore throat and muscle aches. Other severe symptoms are eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases, and other severe and life-threatening complications.

Health Guru : Baby Colic Has No Steadfast Cure
Webmaster | 4. September 2007 @ 16:17

All parents pass through a tedious period when their baby experiences baby colic. Baby or infant colic is a condition where you may find a perfectly healthy baby crying for no reason at all. Sometimes screaming also accompanies this crying and this situation is common amongst babies who are a few months old. At the age of eight months, the child may stop experiencing baby colic.

Colic is more common in the bottle fed baby, however, this does not imply that it is not seen in breast fed babies. There are cases of breast fed babies also experiencing baby colic and bouts generally occur during a specific part of the day, mostly early evening.

The cause has not been proven yet. It is found that the amount of colic in babies tend to differ from one to the other. Babies are generally considered to be suffering from baby colic even if, after all its causes have been ruled out, the baby keeps crying for hours daily, more than 3 days a week, throughout the month.

Colic was first assumed to be abdominal pain that developed with trapped gas in the digestive tract. However, it is no longer considered to be the only cause. Some doctors conclude that the babys delicate nature, its developing nervous system, and the new and harsh environment it lives in all generally lead to baby colic. A condition called mild gastro esophageal reflux has also been linked to it. Sometimes, babies suffering from lactose intolerance may also suffer and circadian rhythms effects, smoking of the mother and smoke in the air, along with existence of too much stress in the pregnant mother during the third trimester of pregnancy have all been found to be associated with baby colic.

There has never been any fixed medical treatment. The treatment of baby colic differs between medical practitioners and physicians of different countries. In fact, there are some physicians who advise the baby to be left alone, and let the baby colic run its course, as there is no actual cure for baby colic. Some doctors today advise simethicone to treat baby colic; this is effective in some cases, and not in others.

Allergies in the baby and mother have now been proven to be the major cause, so it is often advised to control the diet of the breastfeeding mother. This move has in fact produced amazing results. However, it does not necessarily cure it. Soothing measures like pacifiers and rocking have found to be rather effective in calming the baby during bad bouts. Parents generally try all types of methods to cure baby colic. If you have tried several ways, but still not able to solve the issue fully, don't feel disappointed. Baby colic will last only a few months.

Health Guru : It's All About the Calories and Exercising
Webmaster | 3. September 2007 @ 16:17

Like most people when I was younger it seemed I could eat anything and not really ever gain weight. Well now that I'm in my forties it appears that those undisciplined days are over for good. After doing a little research I've come to the conclusion that my lack of activity and slowing metabolism is to blame.

Wanting to lose some weight I went out to look for that magic weight loss plan that would offer a painless process for losing weight. After reading and trying several programs I realized that they all seemed to have the same common theme lower your caloric intake and get off your butt and do something.

If you need to lose some weight, I recommend that you pay close attention to what you eat during the day. Go ahead and count up all of those calories you take in and calculate how many minutes you exercise. It won't take very many days for you to figure out that you take in to many calories and don't exercise enough. Use the information below to help you figure out where you want or need to be.

Calorie Requirements Resting Metabolic Rate represents the minimum energy needs of the body, for day and night with no exercise. Sedentary includes occupations that involve sitting most of the day. Light includes activities, which involve standing most of the day. Moderate may include walking, gardening, and housework. Active includes an occupation that requires manual labor and/or participating in a daily exercise program.

Daily calorie allowance:

Men: Resting -- 12 per lb. body weight. Sedentary -- 16 per lb. body weight. Light-- 18 per lb. body weight. Moderate -- 21 per lb. body weight. Active -- 26 per lb. body weight

Example: I want to reach a weight of 180 lbs, to do so I plan on being moderately active, so my daily caloric intake should be 21 x 180 = 3780 calories per day.

Women: Resting -- 13 per lb. body weight. Sedentary -- 14 per lb. body weight. Light -- 16 per lb. body weight. Moderate -- 18 per lb. body weight. Active -- 22 per lb. body weight

Example: If you want to reach a weight of 130 and maintain that weight and plan on being moderately active, then your caloric intake should be 18 x 130 = 2340 calories per day.

Lastly, no matter what you decide to do go ahead and engage in regular physical activity and reduce sedentary activities to promote health. Good luck!

Health Guru : Your Child Has Diabetes
Webmaster | 2. September 2007 @ 16:02

Diabetes in your child affects the entire family. It can change your life and your childs life for the worst. But that doesn't mean that diabetes should prevent your child from enjoying a fulfilling life full of health, joy and happiness. Knowing what to do, doing research on the disease and working closely with your health care team will help you and your child overcome diabetes.

Diabetes in Children

Type 1 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in children. In recent years, type 2 diabetes has also been diagnosed, probably because of the spike of unhealthy habits and obesity in more developed countries.

Causes

The cause or causes of childhood diabetes are still not known, but the factors are believed to be much the same as with adults: viruses, genetics and the environment play a role in childhood diabetes.

Symptoms are also similar to adults: Increased appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Behavioral problems may also be a symptom of diabetes in a child.

Treatment

Most diabetic children are treated with insulin. Insulin shots are the most common way of administering the insulin. Older kids also use insulin pumps for treatment.

As with adults, control of blood glucose levels is important, and an essential part of doing this is by having a healthy diet and exercising regularly. Talking to a trained dietician will help you come up with healthy eating habits for your child.

What You Must Do As a Parent

You play an important role in your childs life with diabetes. The very first thing you must do is understand what your child is going through, and learn how to deal with the situation in beneficial way. Educate yourself and find out what you must do to help your child face the challenges of diabetes, both emotionally and physically.

Become familiar with your childs treatment

Health Guru : Types Of Chocolate
Webmaster | 1. September 2007 @ 16:17

If you always like to accompany your cup of coffee with a chocolate cookie or other chocolate-based treat, or if you usually order a hot chocolate drink, you might not consider yourself a chocoholic, but you certainly make it to the fans' category. But even of chocolate is not your first choice when it comes to desert, you should probably by familiar with at least its main categories, just in case you are asked if you prefer couverture over white chocolate for your ice-cream glace.

- Dark Chocolate can contain anything from 30% to 75% cocoa solids. It has a slightly sweet flavor and a dark color and it is the chocolate type most used in cooking. For everyday cooking and the majority of the recipes for dark chocolate, choose one with around 50% cocoa solids. However, dark chocolate with a higher cocoa solid content will give a richer, more intense, flavor. This chocolate is often called luxury or continental chocolate and has a cocoa solid content of between 70-75%. Occasionally, cooking experts support that it is essential to use a better chocolate, but the recipe should specify when that is the case.

- Milk Chocolate, as its name suggests, contains milk and has lovely creamy, mild, and sweet flavor. It is mostly used as an eating chocolate, rather than in cooking. However it does have its place in chocolate cookery, especially for decorations, and when a milder, creamy flavor is required. It is more sensitive to heat than dark chocolate so care must be taken when melting it.

- White Chocolate contains lower cocoa butter content and cocoa solids. It can be quite temperamental when used in cooking. Always choose a luxury white cooking chocolate to avoid problems and take great care not to overheat when melting it. White chocolate is useful also for color contrast in decoration, creating a dramatic effect when it is placed over darker backgrounds.

- Couverture is the preferred chocolate for professional use, as it retains a high gloss after melting and cooling. Nevertheless, it requires tempering and is only available from specialist suppliers. In case it can be found to special cooking supply stores, it usually is more expensive than regular milk chocolate.

- Chocolate Glace is a chocolate-flavored cake covering which is an inferior product not generally used by true chocolate lovers. However, it has a high fat content, making it easier to handle when making some decorations such as curls or caraque. In case you do not want to compromise flavor too much, but have difficulty making the decorations with pure chocolate, try adding a few squares of chocolate-flavored cake covering to a good quality chocolate.

- Chocolate Chips are available in dark, milk, and white chocolate varieties, and are used primarily for baking and as decoration materials.

- Coco Powder is the powder left after the cocoa butter has been pressed from the roasted and ground beans. It is unsweetened and bitter in flavor. It gives good, strong chocolate flavor when used in cooking.
