If you are feeling persistent pain in your lower back, the first thing you want to do is visit your doctor in order to get a diagnosis for the problem. After your diagnosis has been completed you will then want to look over the different types of treatments available for back pain.

Most problems involving back pain can be treated in a moderate way, while certain conditions may require you to have surgery. Most patients suffering from back pain will begin feeling relief two weeks after beginning treatment.

Some of the methods used in correcting back pain are very basic. You may only be required to rest or exercise while undergoing physical therapy. More advanced treatments may include acupuncture or chiropractic help. Your doctor will be able to give you a list of treatments for different types of back pain.

Despite this, doing your own research will allow you to better understand the types of treatments available. Different methods of correcting back pain have both advantages and disadvantages. The most important factor in treating your back pain is to be in control of your treatments.

When you have pain in your back, you should be able to get pain relief. Many doctors prescribe medications to their patients in order to reduce pain. Pills taken orally such as aspirin and other medication which don't require prescriptions are often used.

If this isn't strong enough, doctors will often begin prescribing opioids. These usually add to the medicine you're already taking, and are usually ingested in the form of codeines. Sometimes stronger opioids such as morphine are used. Sometimes patients may experience undesireable side effects when taking medications for back pain.

Patients with severe back pain may also need to undergo physical therapy. Some forms of physical therapy are more passive thant others. Getting back massages and applying heat are cold objects to the back generally only work the first few weeks after suffering a back injury. After this patients begin doing active forms of physical therapy such as correcting their posture and other forms of exercise.

Another important treatment for back pain is psychological therapy. Back pain often causes large amounts of stress due to the fact people suffering aren't able conduct everyday activities. Some people may not be able to work and be employed in the types of jobs they enjoy doing. Psychologists will often counsel patients in order to help them cope with and manage the stress they have.

More than 17 million American people are affected by anxiety depression symptoms, so that the specialists have been calling this illness as psychiatric flu.

When the young people are concerned, the psychiatric factors are the ones that influence the anxiety depression symptoms. People have to be thought by the specialist how to deal with the stress factors and also they need to know how to improve their own capacity of handling these stressing factors. Almost the majority of the anxiety depression symptoms are very respondent to different treatments, especially to medication. As a modality of reducing stress, anyone can cut some hours from the work schedule program and a refusal of some social obligations. As for the more improved stress confrontation capacity, the patient is supposed to do a lot of relaxing exercises, more adequate sleeping hours and a healthy diet.

Finding an effective antidepressant drug is not an easy task, as every individual has one particular set of characteristics and therefore it is not possible a priori to establish which antidepressant will be that effective one. Beyond to depression medication, other treatments like psychotherapy, integrated therapy and depression medication, electro convulsion therapy and the therapy with light are today available. Each one of these approaches has detailed prescription lists. As an example, the depression medication treatment and that psychotherapy one have a rate success from 60 to 80%. This integrated modality has one of its particular indications in the advanced shapes of depression. Some patients show the persistence of residual symptoms between an episode and the other and in the shapes in which depression medication or psychotherapy alone is not effective.

There is a large number of anti depression drugs that can help remedy the harmful effects of the depressive symptoms but some of them have more side effects than others and this is the reason why they get dangerous. Considering from the price point of view, there are cheaper and more expensive anti depression drugs that can be used for treating this disease, but they may have severe side effects, such as: wither mouth, urine abstain, sedation and a lot of sexual problems. Talking about sexual mal functions, some drugs, which were recently discovered, characterize an important development regarding the sexual abnormality. Each medication used for treating the disease in question has a skimpy different profile of side effects, so it may be possible for one to try several solution treatments in order for the doctor to discover the most appropriate one.

Backpain and ESI are related to each other in that the latter is very often used to find out the true cause of the former. Back ache is a common phenomenon and is generally a result of a strain or injury to the muscles and ligaments supporting the human spine. An Epidural Steroid Injection or ESI is the most common type of injection given to patients suffering from back and neck pain. The pain in the back can be constant or intermittent and its intensity may vary from a dull ache to a searing feeling.

In a large number of cases, back pain vanishes or can be cured within a few weeks. However, in cases of chronic pain, medical advice is necessary. Patients having difficulty in passing urine or experiencing numbness in the back or genital area or weakness and pain in the legs or feeling unsteady while standing should see a physician immediately. Spinal injections are often used to find out the true cause of the back pain and than to actually treat the pain. Injections which provide temporary relief are called therapeutic injections. In other cases spinal injections are used to diagnose the cause of the back pain. ESI is generally injection used to treat back pain.

The space between the covering of the spinal cord and the inside of the bony spinal canal is called the epidural space. An injection in this area ensures that the medication moves across the whole of the spine and covers all the nerve routs and joints to relieve the back pain. ESIs are generally very effective in the treatment and the true diagnosis of the back pain.

In most of the cases where spinal injections are used, a local anesthetic called Lidocaine is used. Lidocaine is a fast acting drug and its effects wear off in a couple of hours. So it is generally used as a diagnostic tool. Bupivacaine, another anesthetic is used to provide some relief from the back pain. Another commonly used injection is Cortisone. Cortisone is commonly injected with a local anesthetic to reduce inflammation in the affected areas of the patient suffering from severe back pain.

An epidural steroid injection or ESI can be injected in three different ways. In the first case a caudal block is placed through the sacral gap which is the space below our lumbar spine. Than the injection is placed into the epidural space. This type of block reduces the chances of puncturing the dura.

The most common method of giving an ESI to reduce back pain is the Tran lumbar approach. Under this method the needle is placed between vertebrae from the back. The third method is generally used for diagnostic purposes. The transforaminal approach involves injection of the medication around a specific nerve root to find out the exact problem area. The foraminae are small openings between your vertebrae through which the nerve roots exit the spinal canal and enter the body.

Spinal injections should not be used in the case of patients taking a platelet-inhibiting drug, such as aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

And the good news is.....pizza, fried foods, and chocolate do not cause acne!

Acne, or pimples, usually starts in the early teens when the oil glands in the body start making more sebum (oil). Approximately 85% of teens and pre-teens - along with many adults get acne. It is so common that it is considered a normal part of growing up. Acne predominately appears on the face, and sometimes on the back, shoulders and chest. Acne can be heredity,and girls usually get it at a younger age than boys.

Teens get acne because of hormone changes that come with puberty - not because of what they are eating! However, acne is not uncommon to have in your 30's and 40's.

A 'whitehead' results when the hair follicle, or pore, gets plugged up with oil, dead skin cells or germs. If the pore remains open the air touches it and turns it black - it then becomes a 'blackhead'. A blackhead is not caused by dirt.

Acne can be exacerbated by: menstruating; stress; contraception pills that contain male hormones; oily cosmetics; working in hot humid places or with oil or grease; some types of medicines; or hormone changes during pregnancy.

Having acne can affect one's self esteem and body image. This can manifest in numerous ways including: the person growing their hair long and keeping it over their face; by avoiding eye contact; always keeping their body hidden; taking sick days - and missing work or study. Acne can bring on loss of appetite, lethargy, mood swings, crying and sleep issues.

There are lots of acne treatments - some tried and true - and some not - these include: benzoyl peroxide; a course of antibiotics - for severe cases; for some females who may be producing excessive hormones - birth control pills; retinoids eg Retin-A - via prescription; acne creams and cleansers; laser treatments and herbal treatments. With most of these it can take several weeks before you notice any change.

Acne scaring has in the past been of a major concern to a lot of people - there is, however, a new laser treatment for acne scars. The laser treats the damaged skin - resurfacing it, leaving healthy skin unaffected - the laser goes deep into the acne scars - causing collagen remodelling. The procedure is a walk-in, walk-out treatment. It usually takes 4 - 5 treatments for best results.

Colon cleansing is the process of removing toxins from your body. More specifically it is the act of flushing out the toxins with water. It may seem like a painful and uncomfortable experience, but the health benefits far outweigh any temporary discomfort. I've put together this list of 4 tips to help you with your first Colon Cleansing.

1) You want to research about colon cleansing online. Learn all you can about it, because although you may think it's for you it just might not be. There are licensed facilities that will do the colon cleansing for you or you may opt to do it yourself with herbs. Either way you should be prepared by doing the proper research.

2) If doing a colon cleansing in a licensed facility please follow their rules. They will probably not have you eat for 12-24 hours before the procedure and will most likely ask you to drink lots of water instead. Water helps with the cleansing process and pure water will be used during the actual cleansing. Be prepared to immediately use the restroom when your cleansing is complete. It is just a part of the detoxification process. There is no need to feel embarassed as this is completely normal.

3) If doing a home colon cleansing follow the instructions carefully. Usually a home herbal cleanse takes place over 30 days by taking herbal pills. What will happen is the first few days will probably be pretty uncomfortable for you. You'll be using the restroom up to 5 times per day. If this doesn't slow down then you should take less of the herbal pills so as not to dehydrate your body. To help with hydration drink, at minimum, your body weight in ounces of water. So if you weigh 120 pounds, drink 120 ounces of water per day. That may be difficult, but water is healthy and it will help with the cleansing process.

4) While going through the discomfort just remember that you're doing something great for your body and will feel much better once the process is complete. No pain no gain certainly holds true for colon cleansing. Althoug there should be no actual pain, just some discomfort.

If you follow these 4 tips your first colon cleansing experience should be a much easier undertaking. Please look out for my next article with even more colon cleansing tips.

Coffee in the morning. Coffee at the office. Coffee in the afternoon or after dinner. Coffee consumption is a ritual of enormous proportion and that has feed the need for the ever faster and more efficient way to make the coffee.

Coffee makers have evolved like everything else in the world of technology. A simple filter over a pot of steamy water is ancient history. The coffee makers we find today do it all and do it better than ever before.

How Do You Take Your Coffee?

There are so many new kinds of coffees and ways to take it that you almost need an English to Coffee dictionary to interpret for you at the coffee shop. Even more revealing is the fact that many people want to have these exotic mixes and brews in their own homes to enjoy any time of day or night.

Home coffee makers don't just make regular coffee. There are Espresso Maker machine and Cappuccino Makers that make what one could only find at a nice restaurant a decade or two ago. Now these machines at home can grind fresh beans into the perfect recipe and dispense the perfect cup.

The Machines Behind the Madness

Coffee makers are machines of fine craftsmanship and technological wonders all blended into one. The build-in grinder for example, allows you to have a freshly ground cup that is strong and flavourful without having to grind it at the grocery store or specialty shop. Each cup has its own freshly ground beans. Bunn is one such manufacturer of the combination coffee maker.

The espresso machine or cappuccino maker can add milk at just the right time and temperature so the art of making it yourself is easy to master. (Your guests need never know you didn't figure it out on your own.)

Today's kitchen is rendered almost obsolete if it doesn't contain one of the latest coffee makers. The single cup coffee maker is a growing trend as people are trying to cut down on the caffeine. The single cup maker is also ideal if there is only one coffee drinker in the house or if you usually take your coffee at the office.

Let's Talk Beans

Part of what makes a great cup of coffee is the beans. The other part is how well the coffee maker can accurately blend that perfect balance between water and coffee grounds. Most of the world's coffee is grown in a belt consisting of a latitude around central America and around the globe through Africa and Asia. It is this climate that gives the beans the right conditions and perfect growing season so beans can be naturally brought to ripeness.

The next step is the roasting of the beans. The methods vary, but the goal is the same. The idea is to roast the beans to the point they are the most flavourful and aromatic.

Of all the drinks to come and go, coffee remains internationally neutral and has proven a staple of homes world wide for generations. The only difference is in how simply and skilfully it is made. The coffee makers behind the beans have taken coffee making to an art form.

Health Guru : Green Tea Basics
Webmaster | 22. May 2008 @ 16:02

Green tea is becoming very popular today, although many people do not know anything about green tea it is considered to be something healthy and good, something that will improve the quality of life of the one drinking it, and it is very true.

For centuries people have been using tea as a special drink, sometimes as a ceremonial drink and sometimes used for medicinal propose, the benefits of green tea are not something that has been discovered lately but has been used and learned for many years. There are many home remedies that are associated with green tea, it is known that many people use green tea as a relief for nausea, for treating skin and teeth and many other conditions.

The advantages of green tea are mostly famous for their ability to help people on a diet, the green tea diet has had great popularity in the west, and many people know about green tea because of the marketing effort made to sell the green tea diet products, but it is much more than a diet product or any kind of medicine that is used to assist in one or another pain or condition, green tea is a gift that can be used in many ways and in fact it is still researched and examined to see if there is more it can do.

For many in the west green tea is a blessing, the few last years has seen a sharp rise in the quantity of caffeine intake in most of the western world countries, as people drink more and more caffeine their bodies are becoming more dependent on it, and they are also responding to the huge amounts of caffeine in unnatural ways, many of us know the feeling of having too much coffee, and this is exactly why the green tea is so successful in the west, to relief westerners from the ever growing need of coffee.

There is no harm in drinking green tea and you may occasionally find a person who is treating himself by a green tea diet that lasts a few weeks, it has been found that green tea contains antioxidants that help the body regenerate energy and regain its power, it is true that this does not happen overnight, but when you start drinking green tea on a regular basis you will feel healthier almost immediately, especially if you are using green tea to avoid other, less healthier beverages or even behaviors.

Green tea is something westerners are not completely used to yet, and many have not even tasted green tea in their life, but the healthy quality that the tea has together with its ever growing reputation of being good for diet and for relaxation make sure that many will discover it soon, and these people may even be surprised at this alternative to the coffee and other caffeine loaded drinks. Green tea is not the greatest drink in the world, but it can do only good, and a cup or two a day will only result in better life and wider smiles.

Health Guru : The Life And Times Of Wheatgrass
Webmaster | 21. May 2008 @ 16:02

Below I will provide you with a short history of Wheatgrass and why people have now decided to start drinking its juice.

At the start of the 1900's a man called Edmund Bordeaux Szekely found an ancient biblical manuscript and which he then translated. What was so remarkable about this discovery was that when he had translated the document, Szekely decided to form a society called the Biogenic Society which would teach other people this new/old way of eating. Firstly he would publish what he had translated on the document in to little books and sold very cheaply as he wanted the world to know what he had found. The book was called The Essene Gospel of Peace. The Essenes were an extremely righteous group who lived close to the Dead Sea at about the time of Jesus Christ. In fact it was Christ that actually taught them all about the laws of health during this time. The main thing that the Essene Book I teaches you is you do not kill your food by cooking it, whilst in Book IV they teach you that all grasses are good for man and wheatgrass is the most perfect food. You can actually purchase these little books at any health food store.

However, by the 1940's Charles Kettering (formally chairman of the board of General Motors) had donated some money into studying chlorophyll. Chlorophyll was then studied intensively by medical doctors and you will find that there are currently over 40 articles that have now been written on the healing properties of chlorophyll in medical journals. The doctors carrying out the research found that chlorophyll was in fact a great healer and carried on using it for some time. However, because of the pressure being placed on many doctors by drug companies the use of chlorophyll was phased out.

However at another time during the 1940's a lady called Ann Wigmore found that she had healed herself of cancer using certain weeds she found in a vacant lot close to her home in Boston. With the assistance of a friend called Dr Earp Thomas she began studying the natural healing qualities of the weeds she had been using. What she and Dr Thomas found was that there are 4,700 varieties of grass around the world and all of which are good for humans to consume. After carrying out some tests with the help of pets she found that Wheatgrass was the best medicinal grass. She then set up the Ann Wigmore Institute in Boston and people from across the world have now been taught about grasses and the living food healing program. A number of people who have attended this institute have found that the serious disease they attended with has cleared. If you search more closely you will find that Ann Wigmore has written over 35 books on the subject of wheatgrass and living foods.

However, in 2000 many more people were finding out about the benefits of liquid chlorophyll and since the 1940s more research has been carried out not only on wheatgrass but also on barley grass and its healing properties.

Yoshihide Hagiwara who is the owner of a large pharmaceutical company in Japan has carried out extensive research into the healing properties of barley grass, all because he became seriously ill due to him working closely with synthetic drugs. His conclusion was that if synthetic drugs could make you ill, how could they make you well as well. He first of all began to study Chinese medicine and discovered that the father of Chinese medicine had said "It is the diet which maintains true health and becomes the best drug".

In fact if you look at the father of Western Medicine, Hippocrates he says basically the same thing. The basic teachings of Hippocrates is that the body can act as its own physician when provided with the right equipment i.e., living organic nourishment and as long as it is used the way nature intended (uncooked, unprocessed) all should be well.

Therefore it seems that God in fact designed all the foods on earth to be used in such a way as not only would they nourish the human body, but would also keep it in top physical condition and health. Our problem seems to be that we have forgotten these simple little rules.

Health Guru : Fish Oil And Stress
Webmaster | 20. May 2008 @ 16:02

It is well known that stress can potentially have a negative effect on both physical and mental health, but recent research conducted by the University of Valencia in Spain indicates that high-grade ethyl-epa fish oil could possibly prevent some of the adverse effects associated with chronic or prolonged stress. Ethyl-epa is a concentrated and purified form of the Omega 3 essential fatty acid Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA. Researchers found that ethyl-epa helps transport the stress hormone cortisol through the blood brain barrier. This indicates that ethyl-epa fish oil could help cortisol to return to normal levels, which is important when we consider that during periods of prolonged stress, cortisol levels can remain very high and pose a significant risk to health.

Previous Research

Previous studies have already shown us that Omega 3 fatty acids can help us deal with stressful situations. For example, an Israeli study by Yehuda and colleagues reported in 2005 that Omega 3 fatty acids appear to lower cortisol levels, reduce anxiety and improve test anxiety responses. Stress and anxiety related to tests and exams is quite common and can be a major problem for some people and the implications are that increasing intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by supplementing with fish oil might offer some relief. But it's when we are under sustained pressure that we are most at risk of the negative effects of stress, particularly when we cannot relax and allow the body to return to normal afterwards.

A study at Lausanne University published in 2003 found that after giving fish oil for 3 weeks, there was a reduction in stress hormones. Also in 2003, Dr David Horrobin reported that EPA was effective for reducing cortisol and anxiety levels. According to Robert Sapolsky, a neuroendicronlogist and expert on the effect of stress on the body, sustained high levels of cortisol can actually damage the neurons in the hippocampus, the part of our brain we use for learning and memory. Indeed, a recent study conducted by the University of Edinburgh and published in February 2006 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, suggested that high levels of cortisol could be a cause of Alzheimer's disease later in life.

What is Cortisol?

Cortisol is an important chemical that is produced by the body to help us cope with stress. It is part of the "fight or flight" mechanism and without it we would not survive. It is at its highest level first thing in the morning and at its lowest last thing at night. Problems arise when we are subjected to prolonged or continuous periods of stress when cortisol levels are likely to remain very high for some time. Some of the health problems associated with prolonged stress include:

* cardiovascular disease
* depression
* skin problems
* digestive problems
* memory loss
* high blood pressure
* inability to concentrate
* decreased immunity
* mood swings
* fatigue
* anxiety
* feeling of negativity

How can EPA fish oil help?

Research has shown that people under stress have an increased ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood. Omega 6 fatty acids are known to be pro-inflammatory and result in an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoids which can not only lead to many new health problems arising, it can significantly worsen any existing health conditions.

Fish oil that is high in the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA helps the body to produce anti-inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoids, reducing the risk to health and at the same time can provide some relief for many existing health problems. The following list represents just some of the other health benefits of EPA fish oil:

* Helps the blood flow more efficiently through the body and to the brain
* Increases serotonin levels, the feel good' hormone, the opposite one to Cortisol, the 'stress hormone'
* Stabilises mood and alleviates depression
* Alleviates symptoms of skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and acne
* Improves memory, concentration and mental processing
* Lowers high blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides
* Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis and stroke
* Lowers risk of sudden death in heart attack patients
* Boosts the immune system
* Reduces inflammation and associated pain of arthritis

Conclusion

Stress is a natural and necessary part of life and can be described as any event, external or internal, that causes us emotional worry and/or physical distress. It is when it is sustained and prolonged that it becomes a major risk factor for illness and disease. Increasing our intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by supplementing with fish oil can play a role in helping us to face and deal with stressful situations. However, ethyl-epa fish oil in particular, would appear to be an effective, natural and safe option not only to help us deal with stress as it arises, but to reduce the risk posed by the potentially serious effects of prolonged stress.

Health Guru : Splenda is Not Safe!
Webmaster | 19. May 2008 @ 16:02

You must read labels

Splenda is found in processed foods and drinks - mostly, but our latest concern is that 10 % of Splenda is being sold to drug companies and the FDA doesn't require them to report this very toxic product on their labels.

The following symptoms have been noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:

* Skin -- Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have.

* Lungs -- Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.

* Head -- Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).

* Nose -- Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.

* Eyes -- Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.

* Stomach -- Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.

* Heart -- Palpitations or fluttering.

* Joints -- Joint pains or aches.

* Neurological -- Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.

This is not a complete list. A person just reported that the mystery of her mother's conjunctival hemorrhage (blood on the white part of eye); completely cleared up once her mom stopped consuming Splenda.

Please pass this on to family and friends. Also remember that Equal (Aspartame) is just as toxic if not worse. It is the leading cause of migraine head aches plus hundreds of other symptoms as it is an excitotoxin. Russell Blaylock MD has a very good case presentation that Aspartame, MSG, and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (or Soy Protein) are the root causes of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS.

Aspartame has been around for 25 years with a longer track record than Splenda. The above list will grow as time increases with our experiences with Splenda.

About the author:Dr Bob the Health Builder

Robert D Bard, OD, FAAO

I attended West Virginia University and graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Optometry degree.

As a health professional I was always interested in disease prevention but found the medical model - drug companies and doctors - unacceptable. The medical model towards disease is that they want us - the people - to contract disease and they will prevent us from dieing as long as we continue to take their drugs for the rest of our lives. This is their idea of preventive medicine. The population expects prevention to prevent disease before we get sick.

I became overweight and like most people blamed it on me and my eating habits, but I knew that diets and potions on TV DO NOT WORK and therefore put off doing anything until I stumbled across a solution.

In 1999 I began itching and it got worse almost by the day. I started taking antihistamines to reduce the itching and over a 10 month time period visited 4 dermatologists. The first 3 doctors miss diagnosed my problem. The forth discovered the cause but I had to use a pesticide all over my body to correct the condition - I know this seems strange but I had an infestation of Norwegian mites under my skin (I didn't even know that mites had a pedigree much less a country of origin).

When I used the pesticide to kill the mites I swelled up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. With this ordeal I gained even more weight and ended up looking like Porky the Pig. I also lost my sense of taste because of all the antihistamines.

In 2002 I did some consulting work for a supplement company and they gave me a gift book by Sherry Rogers, MD. At the same time I had a patient in my office that sensitive to all chemicals including the chemicals from a carpet that was 6 months old and from my cologne. He had to wear a mask filled with carbon just to get through a basic eye examination. After quizzing him about his condition I discovered that over 6 million people in the US can't function normally because of toxic chemicals - that means holding down jobs and leading a normal life.

Because of this patient I began to investigate toxic chemicals and how they affect people, particularly my health, my taste, and weight problems. With this information I have lost 70 pounds, gone from a jean size of 50 to 40. I feel better, look better, and my big belly that used to catch food is almost gone. (I no longer catch food on my stomach)

I have discovered that the public is one big toxic chemical experiment by industrial food manufactures, chemical companies that control farm chemicals with Genetically Engineered crops, drug companies and companies that want to dump their waste products without protecting the public.

There are some really good people that write books and educate people about health issues, economic issues, environmental issues, food problems but all these people specialize in certain areas. My job as I see it is to be a reporter and filter the important information to my subscribers.

I have also been a farmer for years and one of my discoveries is that our diseased health economy starts with toxic chemicals and crop land.

Unhealthy Soil = Unhealthy Plants and Animals = Unhealthy People

I also think it is terrible that when people retire at the age of 65 that 97% are in poverty in this nation. I believe that I can help people make extra money in retirement through my experience on eBay and other sources of information. I have a free newsletter that discusses health issues and money issues to help people.

Health Guru : The Truth About GERD And Acid Reflux Disease
Webmaster | 18. May 2008 @ 16:02

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is one of the most common chronic conditions out there, but it's only recently that people started to realize what it is and what a GERD symptom is. Otherwise known as acid reflux disease, GERD occurs when the muscles, or sphincters, that close the lower part of your esophagus don't work properly. Then the fluids in your stomach can leak into the esophagus and cause the acid reflux.

That burning feeling in the back of your throat-one of the clearest GERD symptom-occurs because, simply, the acidic fluids from your stomach are burning the tender lining of your esophagus. That's the reason for GERD's most common nickname, heartburn. The burning sensation can sometimes feel as if it's almost happening deep in your chest cavity, near your heart.

Besides this burning sensation, other acid reflex symptoms include a diffuse pain in the chest, sore throat or hoarse voice in the morning, or a full feeling in the back of your throat. You could also suffer from a tight feeling in your throat, a problem with swallowing, a dry cough, and even bad breath.

If you listen to all those medication commercials on TV, you may be led to believe that you must buy an expensive GERD treatment to deal with acid reflux disease and its symptoms. But an acid reflux cure does not necessarily have to come from a costly prescription. You can actually eat a GERD diet to prevent the condition. Depending on your particular case of GERD, this acid reflux diet for prevention could mean that you avoid caffeinated sodas, spicy foods, chocolate and peppermint candies, overly acidic foods, and fatty and fried foods.

Part of this GERD diet could involve not only what foods to avoid, but also when to eat in general to prevent acid reflux disease. For instance, no matter what foods your acid reflux diet does and does not include, it's important to eat your meals at least two to three hours before bedtime-at least. That's because lying down with a full stomach can lead to more of those acidic stomach juices leaking into your esophagus.

Your GERD treatment may also involve certain lifestyle changes. Being overweight is not an acid reflux symptom, but it sure may be a major factor in the condition. So your doctor may recommend a regimen of exercise to go along with that GERD diet, to help you burn calories and melt off those extra pounds. Negative lifestyle behaviors such as smoking and drinking alcohol also can contribute to acid reflux, so you may want to consider cutting down, or quitting them altogether.

The point of all this information-GERD treatment is in your hands first and foremost. With a slight change to your eating habits and a few lifestyle changes, you could cure yourself of that painful and annoying acid reflux, and without resorting to expensive pills or gimmicky tricks.

Health Guru : The Lumbar Scoliosis Brace To Help Check Spinal Degeneration
Webmaster | 17. May 2008 @ 16:02

Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine. It is a progressive disease. Little evidence has been found on the effectiveness of exercises on scoliosis, though there are reports that show some improvement in the degree of curvature. What so far has not been determined is whether the improvement is permanent in nature. The lumbar scoliosis brace is a device to support the spine and check further deterioration of the condition.

People wearing a lumbar scoliosis brace are often suggested exercise to correct scoliosis. These exercises are aimed at helping the wearer adapt to the brace, to allow for correction of the spinal deformity, and to improve trunk muscular tone during the period braces are worn. Braces tend to lead the muscles into losing muscle tone. The physical therapist suggests other exercises for trunk and pelvic correction, which are required to be performed everyday.

Types of Lumbar Scoliosis Brace

Here are some of the common types of lumbar scoliosis braces used to prevent scoliosis from degenerating.

Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral-Orthosis (TLSO) brace: The TLSO brace comes in many styles, but the most commonly used TLSO brace is the Boston brace. The Boston brace is also known as the underarm brace. Made from molded plastic, the Boston brace is custom made to fit the patients body. It is usually worn under clothing and is not easy to detect whether the patient is wearing one. This lumbar scoliosis brace applies three-point pressure to the curvature to prevent it from degenerating further.

Charleston Bending Brace: This lumbar scoliosis brace is also known as the nighttime brace, since it is used only while sleeping. The molding of the brace is done when the patient is bent to the side. It helps in applying more pressure against the curve of the patient to correct the curvature.

Cervico-Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral-Orthosis brace: This lumbar scoliosis brace is popularly known as the Milwaukee brace, and is quite alike the TLSO brace. Additionally, it has a neck ring attached to the brace. It is worn all the time, though it can be removed for any sporting activity.

Health Guru : Sciatica Exercises: An Effective Remedy For Spine Trouble
Webmaster | 15. May 2008 @ 16:02

Sciatica refers to the pain caused by the compression or irritation in the nerves at the lower end of the spine. Sciatica is also known as radiculopathy, which refers to the extension of the spinal disc beyond the normal position, resulting in the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Such a condition can often result in pain in the back and legs. The best remedy for the treatment of this kind of pain is sciatica exercises. It is often believed that bed rest helps in such a condition. However, inactivity usually worsens the pain in sciatica patients. Lack of movement weakens the back muscles and the spinal structures, thus resulting in increased pressure on the back and consequently more back pain. Sciatica exercises are very important for health and fitness of the human back and spine.

Sciatica exercises focus on strengthening the abdominal and back muscles. These exercises include stretching, which helps in improving the flexibility of the back muscles, resulting in reduced pain. Doctors recommend different exercises for sciatica patients, depending on the cause of sciatica, which can also occur due to serious medical conditions such as an infection or tumor. One has to do these exercises regularly and in a proper manner in order to derive maximum benefit in back pain.

Exercising regularly not only helps in the treatment of sciatica-related pain, but also helps in the prevention of any such problems in the future. The most common sciatica exercises that are recommended for the treatment of sciatica-related pain are the Hamstring stretching exercises. The hamstrings are the muscles located in the back of the thigh and help in bending the knee. You must also perform exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles in order to get relief from the sciatica pain.

Health Guru : Bird Flu in America
Webmaster | 14. May 2008 @ 16:02

The only cases of bird flu in America, thus far, have been caused by a different strain of flu virus than the one that is currently sweeping through Asia, Africa and eastern Europe killing thousands of wild and domesticated birds. Wild birds carry a number of these flu viruses, but it is only one strain, H5N1, that has governments throughout the world concerned, both because of the risk to the poultry industry and because H5N1 has caused the deaths of 140 people to date. Countries throughout the world are making efforts to inform the public about safety practices that can lead to bird flu prevention.

Scientists expect to eventually see the H5N1 bird flu in America, but it might not show up. The concern is that migratory birds from Asia could pass the H5N1 strain to migratory birds from the Americas when they both gather in Alaska. So, H5N1 bird flu prevention at this point is focused on Alaska. Scientists believe that if they can identify H5N1 bird flu in America when it first appears, then they can contain it, before it becomes a problem to the poultry industries in the Americas.

The U.S. Geologic Survey and the Department of Agriculture have joined together in a H5N1 bird flu prevention effort that includes testing feces and feather samples from about 150,000 wild birds, mostly waterfowl. Scientists believe that if they find H5N1 bird flu in America, it will most likely show up in the waterfowl first. Unlike domesticated poultry, wild birds can carry the H5N1 bird flu in America and elsewhere in the world without dying. In areas of the world where wild birds mingle freely with domesticated birds they can infect their water supply or pass the virus to them through feces and other secretions, but USDA regulations in America as well as poultry industry standards decrease the likelihood that H5N1 bird flu in America, specifically the United States, will become a problem.

Large poultry farmers in the U.S. are now and always have been concerned about bird flu prevention, no matter what the strain. They take precautions to protect their birds, because their birds are their livelihood. Enclosures are designed to keep their birds in and wild birds out. Workers wear protective suits, boots and head coverings for bird flu prevention and to prevent other diseases from contaminating the poultry.

While there have been some cases of some strains of bird flu in America that have resulted in the destruction of several flocks of chickens in Texas and Virginia, there has only been one case of bird flu in America that affected a human. He was a USDA official and it was a weaker strain of the virus.

While no bird flu prevention efforts can negate the possibility of any bird flu in America, farmers, scientists and government agencies throughout the world are making efforts to identify and contain outbreaks quickly. If you are concerned about bird flu prevention for you and your family, take the same precautions that you would always take to protect yours and your family's health. Cook meat thoroughly. Wash hands, cooking utensils, counter tops or cutting boards that have touched raw meat thoroughly. Eat right, get plenty of rest, take your vitamins and make efforts to maintain a healthy immune system. In this way, when and if cases of H5N1 bird flu in America are reported, you and your family should be safe. Health Guru : The Causes And Symptoms Of Melanoma
Webmaster | 13. May 2008 @ 16:02

Melanoma is a malignant tumor predominantly found in the skin but can be found elsewhere, especially the eye. The vast majority of melanomas originate in the skin.

Melanomas are the most lethal form of skin cancer. As with most forms of cancer, earlier detection gives patients a better chance of survival.

Epidemiologic studies from Australia suggest that exposure to ultraviolet radiation is one of the major contributors to the development of melanoma. Occasional extreme sun exposure resulting in a sunburn is causally related to melanoma. Those with more chronic long term exposure (outdoor workers) may develop protective mechanisms.

Melanoma is most common on the back in men and on legs in women (areas of intermittent sun exposure) and is more common in indoor workers than outdoor workers (in a British study). Other factors are mutations in or total loss of tumor suppressor genes. Use of sunbeds with deeply penetrating UVA rays has been linked to the development of skin cancers, including melanoma.

Possible significant elements in determining risk include the intensity and duration of sun exposure, the age at which sun exposure occurs, and the degree of skin pigmentation. Exposure during childhood is a more important risk factor than exposure in adulthood. This is seen in migration studies in Australia where people tend to retain the risk profile of their country of birth if they migrate to Australia as an adult. Individuals with blistering or peeling sunburns especially in the first twenty years of life have a significantly greater risk for melanoma.

Fair and red-headed people are at greater risk for developing melanoma. A person with multiple atypical nevi or dysplastic nevi are at a significant risk. Persons born with giant congenital naevi are at increased risk.

A family history of melanoma greatly increases a person's risk. Certain 'melanoma families' display features of mendelian inheritance of cancer causing genes. It is critical that individuals with family members who have been diagnosed with melanoma be checked regularly for skin cancer. Patients with a history of one melanoma are at increased risk of developing a second primary tumour.

Do you suspect that you may have Melanoma?

Any mole that is irregular in color or shape should be examined by a doctor to determine if it is a malignant melanoma, the most serious and life-threatening form of skin cancer. Following a visual examination and a dermatoscopic exam (an instrument that illuminates a mole, revealing its underlying pigment and vascular network structure), the doctor may biopsy the suspicious mole. If it is malignant, the mole and an area around it needs excision by a surgeon or dermatologist.

The diagnosis of melanoma requires experience, as early stages may look identical to harmless moles or not have any color at all. Where any doubt exists, the patient will be referred to a specialist dermatologist.

How to Prevent Melanoma

Minimize exposure to sources of ultraviolet radiation (the sun and sunbeds).

Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and broad-brimmed hats offers the best protection.

Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or better on exposed areas.

Disclaimer - The information presented here should not be interpreted as medical advice. If you suspect you have Melanoma, please consult your physician as early as possible for diagnosis and treatment options.

Health Guru : Enzymes - Don't Dine Without Them
Webmaster | 12. May 2008 @ 16:02

Before you take that next bite of food, I have an important question to ask: "Are you getting enough enzymes?"

Tough question, I know. So let me help you out. Do you ever feel tired and sluggish after eating a big meal? Ever have a stomach ache? Indigestion? Constipation? If so, then you're probably not getting a sufficient amount of enzymes.

But an enzyme deficiency is much more serious than just an upset tummy. Here, in alphabetical order, is a partial listing of illnesses and disorders attributed to a lack of enzymes in one's diet:

Aching Feet, Acne, Allergies, Arthritis, Back Weakness, Bladder Problems, Chronic Allergies, Chronic Fatigue, Cold hands and feet, Common colds, Constipation, Cystitis, Depression, Diarrhea, Diverticulitis, Fatigue, Fungal forms, Gall Bladder Stress, Gallstones, Gingivitis, Gum Disorder, Hay Fever, Hearing Problems, Heart Problems, High Blood Pressure, Hot Flashes, Hypoglycemia, Immune Depressed Conditions, Inflammation, Insomnia, Irritable Bowel, Lipase Deficiency, Mood Swings, Neck and Shoulder aches, Parasites, PMS, Prostate Problems, Psoriasis, Sinus Infection, Skin rashes, and Urinary Weakness.

What Are Enzymes?

If you're like most people, you haven't a clue what enzymes are. Enzymes are highly complex protein molecules. They work together with oxygen to help us digest food. This is important because unless food is digested properly, it is not usable by the body.

Enzymes and oxygen are detroyed whenever food is cooked or highly processed. Eating cooked and/or processed foods puts a tremendous burden on your body. Instead of the necessary digestive enzymes coming directly from your food (as nature intended), your body must now call upon its stored reserves to properly digest that food. These reserves are limited. Once the body's digestive enzymes become depleted, your body has no choice but to draw upon its reserve supply of metabolic enzymes.

So what's the big deal? The big deal is, if these metabolic enzymes have to be used to digest your food, a series of unfortunate events are set in motion in your body's metabolism.

First, these metabolic enzymes are now taken away from other important activities. Consequently, numerous bodily functions are disrupted. Your immune system weakens, making you more suseptable to disease. Your energy level drops. In fact, the functioning of every organ system in the body, including the brain, begins to stress out - all because enzymes have been diverted to digest food.

Bottom line, eating foods that are depleted of enzymes over-taxes you, which can ultimately lead to numerous diseases and immunity disfunctions. A diet consisting largely of processed and/or cooked foodstuffs contributes heavily to sickness and disease, not to mention premature aging and an early death!

The Benefit of Raw Food

So what's the answer? I'm not suggesting going cold-turkey by never eating cooked foods, nor am I saying to never dine at restaurants. What I am saying is this: If the majority of your diet consists of cooked and/or processed foods and you're not supplementing your diet with enzymes, you're probably a heart attack waiting to happen.

Here's the solution: Replace most of your cooked and processed foods with raw foods. The benefits of natural raw foods have been well documented. Raw foods are alive with life-enhancing phytochemicals and essential enzymes. And to be on the safe side, consider an All-Natural Whole Food Multi-Vitamin Supplement that is high in Enzymes, one that has 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamins and minerals. That way, you know you're getting the nutrients you need, plus you're not over-taxing your body's digestive system.

Remember: Before you take your next bite of food, "Don't Dine Without Enzymes!"

Health Guru : Simple Home Remedies For Cold Sores
Webmaster | 11. May 2008 @ 16:02

The virus Herpes simplex primarily causes cold sore or the fever blisters. This virus is known to be naturally present in human bodies but will infect it if some elements may trigger this condition. This disease is characterized by the eruption of tiny blisters around the mouth when a person has a fever or colds. Cold sore is most prevalent during winter and cold weather. Many patients claim that this is the resultant of stress however, no scientific studies have yet established this view. Yet, this remains true for some sufferers.

Also, other known causes of cold sores are excessive fatigue, menstruation in women, and too much exposure to sunlight and a number of respiratory infections. Calcium and Vitamin B12 are also pointed out as one of the main cause of cold sores eruption, which in effect leads to poor vitamin intake and diet. Legumes, cereals, whole grain products and other food items with high arganine contents are known to trigger the production of herpes virus in the body. It is essential that a cold sore sufferer must avoid the intake of such foods.

Cold sore is a transmittable disease, this is why it is important that the disease is treated right away as to prevent the infection of the individuals surrounding the patient.

Home remedy for cold sore must be first applied on the prodome (tingling) stage of the disease. The actions taken in this period will determine the outcome and the duration of the sore. It is important that it is in her that effective measure be employed.

If you are sufferer, change your toothbrush frequently. This is not a home remedy for cold sores but may prove effective in lessening the chances of more severe infections.

In addition to this, some cold sores patient recommend that use of nail polish remover. This may seem a bit farfetched but has proven effectivity on some. This home remedy for cold sore works by applying small amount of nail polisher remover on the affected area. This will smell and burn a bit but after leaving the polisher on your lips for ten minutes, the swelling will subside and so does the soreness. This method must be combined with Nyquil as this product soothes the skin after the immediate effects of the nail polish remover.

If nail polish remover don't appeal to you, you may apply toothpaste, ice cubes or abreeva as alternative solutions. These have the same effect of eliminating the virus on the sores. Once you were not able to prevent the blisters from forming, you can count on the possibility that your sold sores will complete its full cycle. From macule form to papule form, inflamed stage and bump stage respectively.

A housewife related that her cold sores usually occur when she feels that something stressful will arise. She specifically gave the example- not being able to find her family for hours. When she feels the initial symptoms of the cold sore, she immediately applies ice around her mouth. This she claims is effective in preventing the cold sore bigger. After quite some time, she would apply carmax on the affected area. Health Guru : Eat Smart
Webmaster | 10. May 2008 @ 16:02

It should not come as a surprise that what we have for breakfast, lunch or dinner has an effect on how well we think. After all, our brain is very particular about food requirements. If it is possible to boost mind performance through diet, it must definitely be worth a try. So, how would the smart food plan be?

Any eating plan aiming to high mental performance should include the following:

Steady supply of glucose - and this means first, do not skip breakfast; second, eat at regular intervals, and grab a snack when needed to keep glucose levels steady. People who skip breakfast perform worse at work or school. And, while any kind of breakfast is better than no breakfast, fizzy drinks and sugary snacks will not pave the way to peak mental state.

High fiber - beans, pulses, wholegrain cereals, vegetables and fruit. High fiber diets have been linked to better learning and reasoning.

B vitamins - whose brain boosting powers have been demonstrated meat, eggs, dairy, yeast extracts and vegetables.

Antioxidants - including beta carotene, vitamins C and E, for protection against free radicals; found in vegetables and fruits. Antioxidants not only protect your cognitive skills but also may reduce the risk of heart disease and protect against certain forms of cancer. Another good reason to increase your vegetable intake.

Nutrients required to produce neurotransmitters - for instance, eggs are rich in choline, a nutrient that helps to stave off memory loss due to ageing. Yogurt and turkey are rich in tyrosine, precursors of other important neurotransmitters. Tyrosine becomes depleted when we are under stress. We do not need to learn the whole list if we ensure our diet is varied enough. A varied diet guarantees an adequate supply of micronutrients without having to perform complicate calculations. When a food group is excluded, either for health reasons or preference, it is necessary to check if we need to supplement of certain nutrients.

The right fat our brain is mostly fat and the latest evidence suggests that trans-fatty acids congest the system while omega-3 fatty acids keep it working. And where can you find omega-3 fatty acids? The best source is oily fish, packed not only with omega-3 but also many other brain friendly minerals and nutrients, not present in other vegetable sources of this fatty acids, like flax. Fish is indeed brain food.

How do we put all these together? It might seem an impossible task; relax it can be achieved. Feel free to modify these suggestions to suit your taste and seasonal food availability.

SAMPLE MENU I

Breakfast - Baked beans on wholegrain toast.
Lunch - Curried egg salad with plenty of lettuce, shredded carrots, tomatoes, scallions, a few scattered nuts and an olive oil dressing. Yogurt.
Snack - Small dark chocolate bar.
Dinner - Wild salmon steak with asparagus and brown rice. Finish with strawberries.

SAMPLE MENU II

Breakfast - Yogurt with blueberries. Oats.
Lunch - Three bean salad with tuna, tomatoes and onions. Orange juice.
Snack - Your favorite nut butter on wholegrain bread.
Dinner - Curried turkey, broccoli, and sweet potatoes. Traditional banana and egg custard as dessert.

One point to remember is that one can have too much of a good thing. For instance, eating mango for breakfast, carrots for lunch and sweet potatoes for dinner, daily, beta carotene levels will be very high; in fact, too high, and keeping this sort of diet for long will produce an unhealthy yellowish skin color. There is not need either to eat fish or eggs every single day, as there are other foods with equally high nutrition value.

Design your own menus aiming for variety, balance, and portion size control.

Health Guru : The Importance Of Hair Loss Control
Webmaster | 9. May 2008 @ 16:02

There are many approaches to hair loss control, and it is important to choose the right approach for your own hair loss problem. There are nearly as many different approaches to the problem of thinning hair and hair loss as there are men and women who suffer from the problem, and it is important to choose a hair loss treatment regimen that will help to arrest the hair loss and possibly even help you regain the hair you have lost.

While some hair regrowth has been noted with a number of different treatment options, in general it is always much easier to deal with a hair loss problem at its start than to wait until the problem has become more advanced. It is generally much easier to stop a hair loss and thinning hair than it is to regain the hair that has already been lost.

There are of course a number of different approaches to hair loss control, including topical treatments like creams and ointments, special shampoos designed to reinvigorate the scalp and prevent hair loss and of course a number of over the counter and prescription medications that can be taken orally. One of the most common ingredient found in all kinds of topical hair loss treatments is known to the scientific world as ketoconazole. This ingredient has strong anti-fungal properties, and in addition it is a potent inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase, thought to play an important role in hair loss.

In addition a number of prescription medications, including Rogaine and Propecia, have shown great promise in the treatment of hair loss, and many hair loss sufferers have used these two prescription medications successfully ever since they first came on the market.

In addition to these existing hair loss control products there are a number of important new breakthroughs on the horizon, including a number of experimental procedures that use stem cells to stimulate the growth of the hair follicles and rejuvenate the scalp. In addition, surgical and non-surgical hair transplantation is also showing a great deal of promise, and new advances continue to be made with every passing year.

There are of course a number of other ways to reduce the possibility of hair loss and keep the scalp and hair healthy and rejuvenated. Some of these natural methods of controlling hair loss are lots of fun, like regular exercise. Many studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise can help to keep the androgen levels in the body lower, thereby maintaining optimal overall health and also improving the health of the scalp and reducing the harmful effects of androgens on the hair.

Reducing stress can also be an important part of controlling possible hair loss. Many studies have shown that high stress levels can have a strong impact on all kinds of physical problems, including of course hair loss. Keeping stress to a minimum has a number of great health benefits, of course, and preventing hair loss is just another reason to keep your life as stress free as possible.

Health Guru : The Types and Causes of Hypertension
Webmaster | 8. May 2008 @ 16:02

There are many different types of hypertension and the reason for having each of them varies. The type of hypertension that has no known cause is called essential (or primary) hypertension. There have though been some factors offered as possible causes and these include genetics, hormones, the environment and salt levels. Having an immediate family member with hypertension certainly puts you in a higher risk category and you should be careful to make any changes advised by your doctor to prevent it.

Another type of hypertension is brought on because of another condition or disease and this is known as secondary hypertension. In order to keep your secondary hypertension under control it follows that you must have the other condition under control also. These other illnesses include arteriosclerosis, diabetes and kidney disease but it can also be due to taking certain medications for a variety of other conditions.

This brings us to the next type of hypertension - medication induced hypertension. This can be caused both by taking medications and by coming off medication too quickly. There are a host of prescription medicines that have been known to cause hypertension such as birth control pills, migraine medication, corticosteroids and chronic anaemia medications. Even medicine that has been prescribed to tackle your high blood pressure can cause a rebound hypertension effect if they are stopped too quickly. Also, there are several over the counter medications for such conditions as coughs, colds and asthma that can bring on hypertension. It goes without saying that street drugs are bad for your health but drugs such as amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine can cause hypertension as well.

Many would say that having children gives them high blood pressure but for many women that problem starts before the child is born with gestational hypertension. During the pregnancy, a woman's blood pressure will be closely monitored for both her and the child's well-being. If the levels are becoming dangerously high your doctor may recommend dietary changes such as less salt and soda drinks. In the worst case, if the problem increases the baby may have to be delivered by C-section. Usually, though your blood pressure will become normal after delivery.

So far, the conditions described are all controllable and not immediately life threatening. Those diagnosed with what is known as malignant hypertension are not as fortunate as their blood pressure has become excessively high. Damage is likely to many vitally important parts of the body such as the brain, eyes, blood vessels, kidneys and heart. Malignant hypertension is a medical emergency and patients may need to undergo major surgery to save their lives.

Health Guru : Getting Nuts
Webmaster | 7. May 2008 @ 16:02

Nuts are much more than a snack; besides their obvious use adding flavor and texture to any dish, nuts are a valuable source of nutrients in their own right. In Western cuisine, nuts are usually treated as a luxury and relegated to confectionery and desserts. Vegetarians know better and give nuts the consideration due to real food. The latest research suggest this is the right approach; a daily serving of nuts is a great way to stay healthy ad live longer.

Contrary to what their high calorie count hints, nuts can even help to control weight as the balanced blend of nutrients they supply prevents cravings. So anyone avoiding nuts for this reason has been missing out on an easy source of health. Providing sugared and salted nuts are avoided, all the calories in nuts are good ones, and their fat is of the kind that prevents heart disease and feeds the mind.

Basic Facts About Nuts

Nuts are protein rich - almonds and peanuts have a higher ratio protein to weight than beef or chicken meat.

Nuts are packed with vitamin and minerals - including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and vitamins A, B, C and E. Black walnut are one of the best sources of the oligo-element manganese, as Brazil nuts are of selenium.

Their fatty acid profile has actually shown to decrease the risk of heart disease by lowering the levels of "bad" cholesterol.

Nuts have generally a very low glycemic index and dietitians recommend including nuts in the diets of people with insulin resistance problems.

Six Easy Ways To Enjoy Nuts

For a healthy, nutritious and quick dessert - get cheese and nuts.

Nutritious, healthy and quick snack - grab a handful of plain roasted nuts, alone or mixed with dried fruits, a quick burst of energy without the side effects of a sugar low.

Nutritious, quick lunch - add a handful of toasted nuts to a salad and use a fat free dressing. A nut butter sandwich is perfectly healthy. Try a simple sandwich with almond butter and thinly sliced apple and celery. Extra benefit, the almond, apple, celery combination makes a complete meal.

Nutritious quick meal - add some nuts to any vegetable stir fry.

Healthy, nutritious drink - prepare your favorite smoothie or fruit milk shake adding some ground nuts or nut butter. Try this, add 1 level Tbs nut throw 1 Tbs almond butter, 1 apple, peeled, cored, and diced, and some celery, washed and chopped, into the blender with some milk and honey or sugar to taste. Use almond milk and skip the almond butter to make it lighter.

Western cuisine traditional - use nuts in stuffing for meat or poultry, and with cookies, pastries, cakes, ice creams, and fruit salads.

Getting Nuts In Your Diet

Try to incorporate nuts to your diet slowly. Ingesting three pounds of nuts a day is not going to make for years of nut neglect, and we have already mentioned nuts are high in calories, so portion control is in order. A serving of nuts is a handful, about 25 almonds or 10 Brazil nuts, or 1-2 level tablespoon of nut butter.

Nuts are Nature's gift to man, flavorful, healthy, and able to give a recipe the contrast in textures that only professional chefs provide, so don't limit their use to sprinkling a few chopped nuts on ice cream; it is worth to add them to sweet and savory dishes. Enjoy getting nuts!

Utterly Nutty Cooking Tips

The most popular nuts and seeds you would find in any pantry today are almonds, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, chestnuts, coconuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and walnuts. Filberts are a kind of hazelnut.

* Mix toasted hazelnuts with double cream cheese, minced garlic and paprika. Spread over crackers.

* For a fragrant oriental dessert add toasted pine kernels to a fruit salad.

* Festive chestnut stuffing - Mix 1 cup chestnut puree, 1/2 cup bread, no crust, crumbled, 1 egg, 1 minced onion, and the juice and rind of 1 orange. Season and use it to stuff a turkey, duck or a chicken.

* Fried chicken with a nutty twist dip chicken pieces in seasoned egg, beaten, and cover with a mixture of 1 Tbs flour and 1 cup ground pecans. Cook until golden.

* Garnish grilled fish with chopped peanuts fried in butter until golden and lemon wedges.

* Use green pistachio nuts to garnish lemon curd, lemon cheesecake or lemon souffl.

* Get crunchier burgers by rolling them on lightly salted chopped peanuts; and get also added protein. Recommended proportion 1/4 lb peanuts per 1/2 lb ground meat.

* For a crunchier fruit pie, sprinkle ground nuts on top of the pastry before adding the fruit. The nuts will absorb any liquid from the fruit adding flavor on top.

Potential Problems

Nuts are an important source of protein in a vegetarian diet, but they are deficient in the amino acid lysine, so in a vegetarian diet, nuts should be combined with other lysine rich sources of protein, like beans and pulses.

Nut allergy can be very dangerous. Be extremely careful and avoid completely using nuts around people suffering this type of allergy.

Very young children could easily choke on whole nuts and because of the risk of nut allergies, follow the pediatrician's advice on how and when to incorporate nuts to their diet. It follows you should not offer nuts to a child without the parent's permission.

Health Guru : Is Low Blood Pressure a Cause for Concern?
Webmaster | 6. May 2008 @ 16:02

Low blood pressure is considered an abnormal condition. However for some, it is much better than high blood pressure. Many people who have low blood pressure are healthy and have no signs or symptoms related to lower than normal readings. Yet for others it can cause dizziness and fainting or it can also indicate serious heart, endocrine or neurological disorders.

Low blood pressure is simply a condition where an individuals blood pressure is much lower than the norm. It is also called hypotension or syncope, which points to fainting. It can cause symptoms such as dizziness or lightheadedness.

Low blood pressure happens when the flow of blood is too low to deliver enough oxygen and nutrients to vital organs, such as the brain, heart, and kidney; the organs do not function normally and may be permanently damaged. It should be noted that unlike high blood pressure, which is defined on the basis of blood pressure alone, low blood pressure is defined primarily by signs and symptoms of low blood flow. In fact, some individuals may have a blood pressure of 90/50 and have no signs or symptoms of low blood pressure, and, therefore, not have low blood pressure symptoms. Others who normally have a blood pressure of 130/80 may develop symptoms and signs of low blood pressure if their blood pressure drops to 100/60.

Common causes of low blood pressure:

* Medicines or any medications used for surgery
* High blood pressure treatments
* Anti-anxiety agents
* Diuretics
* Heart medicines
* Some antidepressants
* Narcotic analgesics
* Alcohol

There are also other causes of low blood pressure such as:

* Diabetes
* Fainting
* Heart attack
* Heart failure
* Dehydration
* Heart rhythm changes
* Shock
* Anaphylaxis

Orthostatic hypotension is another common type of low blood pressure. This results from a sudden change in body position. It happens usually from lying down and moving to an upright position.

Despite the possible side effects, people who have lower blood pressures have a lower risk of strokes, kidney disease, and heart disease. Athletes, people who exercise regularly, people who maintain ideal body weight, and non-smokers tend to have lower blood pressure. Low blood pressure is actually desirable as long as it is not low enough to cause symptoms and damage to organs in the body.

In fact, low blood pressure in healthy people without symptoms or organ damage needs no treatment. All patients with symptoms possibly due to low blood pressure should be evaluated by a doctor. Patients who have had a major drop in blood pressure from their usual levels even without the development of symptoms also should be examined. The doctor needs to identify the cause of the low blood pressure since treatment will depend on the cause.

Low blood pressure is not as treacherous as high blood pressure. For people who have hypotension, sufficient sleep and rest is very important. Also, sleeping in daylight is different from sleeping at night. People who have night jobs make it a point to sleep during daylight. Even if you have sufficient sleep low blood pressure still arises.

If you have low blood pressure it is advised that you have regular intake of iron to avoid anemia or other disorders that are caused by low blood pressure. Consult your doctor at once if you ever feel dizzy, have chest pains, shortness of breath, and an irregular heartbeat, fever higher than 101 degrees, headache, and stiff neck or severe upper back pain.

Health Guru : Flu Shot Ingredients
Webmaster | 5. May 2008 @ 16:02

The major flu shot ingredients are dead influenza viruses. There may be any number of different flu viruses circulating at any one time, but pharmaceutical companies only choose three as annual flu shot ingredients. Even if you take an annual flu shot, you could still contract another flu virus and still come down with the flu. So, it is still important to protect your immune system and practice good health habits. Common flu vaccine side effects include body aches, low grade fever and soreness at the point of injection. There are some rare, but serious flu vaccine side effects that concern many people.

In addition to the major flu shot ingredients, pharmaceutical companies add preservatives. Until recently there were no preservative free flu shots. The addition of the preservative thimerosal to flu shot ingredients has caused illness and injury. Thimerosal is mercury based and is believed to have been the cause of flu vaccine side effects in many people. Of major concern is the increase of autism in recent years and many researchers and doctors believe that thimerosal, a known neurotoxin, used as flu shot ingredients and in other childhood vaccines is the cause.

Some researchers and doctors believe that flu shot ingredients, including thimerosal and aluminum, increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimers disease. This, of course, is not one of the common flu vaccine side effects and since Alzheimers does not develop immediately after taking the shot, then the link can not be proven. A prominent physician and researcher showed that people who had five consecutive influenza vaccinations between the years 1970 and 1980 were ten times more likely to develop Alzheimers than were individuals who had none, one or two.

It is believed that some people cannot shed mercury from their systems and it builds up in their brains causing nerve and brain damage. In addition, some people are allergic to mercury and thimerosal and can experience serious allergic reaction as flu vaccine side effects. Some states have banned mercury from flu shot ingredients intended for use in children and pregnant women. But, while health advocates have petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban thimerosal from flu shot ingredients, nothing has been done at this time. Many manufacturers continue to add thimerosal to their flu shot ingredients.

The dead influenza viruses which are the major flu shot ingredients are grown in chicken eggs. So, people who are allergic to chicken eggs could have serious flu vaccine side effects. Some people blame the onset of chronic fatigue on flu vaccine side effects, but there is no scientific research supporting this belief.

The influenza nasal spray vaccine is chosen by some as an alternative to the flu shot. Ingredients in the nasal spray include weakened live influenza viruses. The common nasal spray flu vaccine side effects include runny nose, headache, sore throat and cough. The nasal spray flu vaccine is preservative free, but is only approved for use in healthy people between the ages of 5 and 49.

Concern over flu shot ingredients and flu vaccine side effects raise questions in the minds of some people as to whether or not healthy people, with a healthy immune system even need an annual influenza vaccine. Alternatives include the use of natural immunity boosting products like Echinacea, which has been shown to reduce both flu recovery time and the likelihood of developing complications. Some feel that these products may even reduce the likelihood of contracting the flu, the common cold and other viruses. Natural immune system boosters have no unwanted side effects and carry none of the risks associated with flu vaccine side effects and flu shot ingredients. Health Guru : Acne's upsetting problems
Webmaster | 4. May 2008 @ 16:02

If you discover that you recently suffer from acne, dont desperate, there are possible cures for this skin disease. If the cause of acne has been established, a solution is possible.

Anyone with or who has had acne can tell you, how many times a day they've cleaned their faces with anti-bacterial facial wash and still faced new pimples the next day.

The same goes for all the other topical creams for acne available in the market, which kills germs and open up blocked pores. These may provide temporary relief, but you will never experience acne free skin by only focusing on acne from the outside.

The real and main causes of acne are hormone imbalance, water retention and toxins. Lets talk about hormones. Hormones are chemicals that are produced by glands in the body and circulate in the bloodstream that control numerous body functions including sebum (skin oil) production and regulation. The hormones that are responsible for acne are called androgens. This is because androgens stimulate the sebaceous glands (glands in the skin that secrete oil to the surface of the skin.)

When you have too many androgens in the blood, your sebaceous glands begin to over-produce oil in the skin. You have to be clear that it is not only oil that will cause acne but its the initial problem you want to resolve.

The next part of the problem is toxins in the blood and lymph. When your liver and kidneys are not properly cleansing the blood and are overloaded, the liver is unable to properly 'deactivate' used hormones and remove them from the body.

The combination of oil, bacteria and toxins blocks pores generate Acne. Inside the blocked pores also are bacteria which grow in a low-oxygen environment. This bacteria aggravates the skin condition and causes an inflammatory disease, otherwise known as acne.

Hormone imbalance doesn't only cause acne, but can be responsible for many other problems including: allergies, fatigue, headaches, mood swings and insomnia.

For most teenagers, hormone imbalance occurs during puberty when the body is busy producing hormones for growth, maturity and reproduction. In case of adult acne, it predominately arises from the inability of the liver and kidneys to effectively eliminate excess hormones and toxins from the blood.

In order to cure your acne you have to be able to get your hormones into balance by feeding your body the key nutrients that aid hormone regulation in the glands and also strengthen the liver which is the other hormone regulatory system. You have to also apply a topic that trigger the self healing process of your skin, this way you will avoid further blemishes while you are treating the main cause of acne.

Health Guru : How To Make Your Own Sauna!
Webmaster | 3. May 2008 @ 16:02

Infrared Sauna Thermal System makes it possible for people in wheelchairs, or those who are otherwise unable to exert themselves or who won't follow through on an exercising and conditioning program to achieve a cardiovascular training effect. This also allows for more variety in any ongoing program.

Make Your Own Sauna!

Four, red heat bulbs from the hardware store are mounted on a piece of 1/2" plywood, 40" high and 15" wide. The unit is placed in a small bathroom or closet at least 4' long, 3' wide and 6' high. In addition to the wood and bulbs, you will need four flush-mount bulb sockets, fifteen feet of heavy lamp cord, a medium-heavy duty male wall plug and 8 wood screws to fasten the sockets to the plywood. An on-off switch and a thermometer are optional, but recommended.

Mount the sockets on the plywood in a diamond shape. The bottom socket is in the center, 1' from the bottom of the plywood. Two sockets are 28" from the bottom of the plywood and 10" apart. The top socket is centered on the plywood and 3' from the bottom. This should form a narrow diamond shape.

Large sockets sold as fixtures can only be wired from the back. Drilling the holes will be more work. You may find smaller flush mount sockets that can be wired from the front. Wire the sockets together in parallel so one bad bulb won't disable the unit.

With each use, instead of plugging the unit in, it is easier to have a switch. The best is probably a wall switch that can handle 1000 watts. This requires an outlet box screwed to the plywood. Keep sweaty hands off the switch as they could cause a short.

The bulbs must be the red type, of 250 watts each. Do not use the clear ones as their spectrum is not correct. You must not touch the bulbs during use, or let water or anything touch them. Observe all cautions as with any appliance exposed to heat and moisture. If children or the disabled will use the unit, consider a protective screen. Bend some chicken or stucco wire around the bulbs and staple it to the wood. Another way is to recess the bulbs or place them in reflectors. If building an enclosure, you could place the bulbs behind.

Lean the unit against a bathroom or closet wall. Secure it so it won't fall over. The enclosure needs be small enough to hold the heat, and large enough to turn around. The other option is to build an enclosure of wood, glass or cardboard. Build the unit at least 4' by 3' by 6' high. Siding made of cedar or fir is a popular option. The siding slides into a frame and no nails are needed. Walls can be built as modules, then screwed together. (see Sauna Detox)

Plywood will also work, since the enclosure stays relatively cool. Some sauna companies use glass for at least one wall. Glass reflects far infrared energy but is not a good insulator. Cardboard is the least expensive. Tape or staple together two refrigerator boxes. Ventilating the sauna is a good idea. To allow gases to escape, leave a crack around the door or somewhere else high up.

Medical research confirms the use of sauna provides cardiovascular conditioning as the body works to cool itself and involves substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. As a confirmation of the validity of this form of cardiovascular conditioning, extensive research by NASA in the early 1980's led to the conclusion that infrared stimulation of cardiovascular function would be the ideal way to maintain cardiovascular conditioning in American astronauts during long space flights. Blood flow during whole-body hypothermia is reported to rise from a normal 5-7 pints per minute to as much as 13 pints per minute.

Health Guru : The Devestating Effects Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
Webmaster | 2. May 2008 @ 16:02

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a devastating disorder that is one of many listed under the general term, 'Repetitive Strain Injury' (RSI).

Of all repetitive strain injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome is the most recognized and prevalent among the general populace. And due to this recognition, many people are concerned about being afflicted with carpal tunnel and its debilitating symptoms, a concern that should be on the minds of anyone that is involved in work or recreational activities that require extensive use of the hands, especially in static motions such as 'gripping' and/or repetitive motions like typing, clicking a computer mouse, assembly, etc.

Below is a list of the symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and a list of steps that can be taken to help prevent this terrible and devastating disorder that has reached pandemic proportions.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms:

- Tightness, discomfort, stiffness or pain on the front side of the hands/wrists.

- Tingling, numbness and/or paresthesia (Pins & needles) affecting the thumb, index, middle and one-half of the ring finger. The thumb and fingers do not have to be affected simultaneously as symptoms will often vary and move around. (Example: The thumb and index finger may be numb one day and the next day the numbness and tingling in the thumb and middle finger are more noticeable.)

- Loss of strength in the fingers/hands. (Grip Strength)

- Pain, aching, swelling, and diminished coordination and dexterity.

- A need to stretch and/or massage hands, wrists and arms.

- Assuming a defensive posture in order to protect sensitive hands/wrists.

Because carpal tunnel syndrome and its symptoms are something that everyone should be aware of in this day and age of computers, video games, personal assistant devices and other technological advances, it is important to take the necessary steps in order to prevent carpal tunnel from developing in the first place.

By implementing the following steps, you can greatly reduce your risk of getting carpal tunnel syndrome as well as stave off many other repetitive strain injuries that are caused in the exact same manner as carpal tunnel, such as Guyons Syndrome, Trigger Finger and Tendonitis of the hands and wrists.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Prevention Protocol:

- Task Variation: It is wise to vary tasks throughout the day in order to keep the force and duration of the specific motion to a minimum. If a typical workday involves 5 types of activities; instead of doing task #1 for 1.5 hours and then moving on to task #2 for 1.5 hours, etc., it is best if task #1 can be performed for 30-minutes and then task #2 is performed for 30 minutes, and so on, repeating tasks #1-5 every 30 minutes until they are completed. If this is not possible for the type of work that is required, ask the employer health director to implement a task rotation schedule where workers perform a different type of task every 1-2 hours throughout the day, making sure that each task is different enough that it does not tax the same muscle group(s) in the same manner as the previous task or the next task. It is still important that in these 1-2 hour shifts that mini-breaks are taken for 2-3 minutes every 30 minutes. Implementing task variation is very successful tool in keeping productivity high and repetitive strain injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome to a minimum.

- Task Requirement Limitation: The 'task requirement limitation' protocol sets a limit on the duration and force of a given job or task, making sure that workers are only required to perform a certain number of repetitive movements or a certain amount of force over a specified period of time before a break is required. Implementing a mini break for every 30 minutes of work activity is very important in order to prevent muscle hypertonicity and fatigue from setting in, the main causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Ergonomic Systems: Ergonomic systems and tools are important in helping to reduce the amount of stress and strain that is inflicted upon the body, but ergonomic systems and tools by themselves cannot prevent or 'cure' injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Mini-Breaks: It is very important to implement short breaks every 30 minutes of work activity in order to reduce stress and strain to the fingers, hands, wrists and forearms. These breaks only have to last 2-3 minutes, but are key in allowing the muscles to relax, which helps to prevent a muscle imbalance from occurring and developing into carpal tunnel syndrome. Even more important in carpal tunnel syndrome prevention, is implementing the following activities into these mini-breaks.

- Stretch: Stretch the short, restrictive muscles in order to lengthen them, which, reduces pressure on the underlying muscles, blood vessels and nerves. (Example: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Stretch the muscles on the front of the forearm that flex the fingers, hand/wrist.)

- Exercise: Strengthen the weak, underdeveloped muscles in order to help shorten/tighten them. Performing strengthening exercises to the muscle groups opposite to those that are short and tight allows the muscles on both sides of the joint to return to a more natural, balanced position. The strong, short muscles are lengthened and the weak, long muscles are shortened, creating equality and stability around the entire joint. Health Guru : Ringworm: Fungus Or Real Worm Under My Skin
Webmaster | 1. May 2008 @ 16:02

If you are looking at a patch of skin that is kind of reddish and has rounded edges but normally is not in that area, YOU MIGHT HAVE RINGWORM! Not a real worm but a skin infection caused by fungus

Most people dont get a mirror to look in the mirror to see the area back of their neck. My adult daughter teaches grade school and we were at a basketball game. Her long hair was in a ponytail and draped in front of her. The reddish patch of skin about the size of a golf ball was obviously not there as she grew up so I asked if it itched. What? What are you talking about? No its not ringworm! That's gross!

Most people have never heard of a yeast overgrowth in the body, or tinea, or dermatophytes. But they have heard of jock itch, athletes foot and womens yeast infection. These are all caused by fungus overgrowth. One of these is called ringworm.

When changes occur in the body such as stress, menstrual cycle, hormonal change, or sometimes the taking of antibiotics can cause the ph balance in the body to change so that fungus can grow in abundance. The fungus is present in our body at all times but is not allowed to grow out of control because our immune system will kill off most of the fungus. Fungus spores are present in every area of the globe.

Ringworm may itch, may spread to large areas, may infect pets too, may be eliminated by topical solutions or in extreme cases require antibiotics.

The characteristics of skin infected in circular patterns evokes the name ring, the growing of the infection somehow was correlated to worm. The center of the ring of skin that is infected may clear up leaving the outer circle to define ringworm. In some cases the infection is so large that no ring is noticeable. The fungus can cause patches of hair to fall out in the scalp, beard or pet. The hair will grow back.

Ringworm is prevalent in children as they spend a lot of time outdoors and in contact with the ground.

Inspect your pets for ringworm fungus infections, as dogs, cats and horses are hosts of ringworm fungus. Prevent any member of the family from using communal hairbrushes and combs.

The ringworm fungus is described as expanding raised rings of pinkish inflamed skin, sometimes scaly on any location on your body, that can be a lesion, blistered or cracked skin. In most cases ringworm is described as a circular area of discolored skin that itches. Ringworm and all fungus overgrowth have had natural remedies attested to, on the World Wide Web, of tea tree oil, colloidal silver and oregano oil. These natural remedies will not further upset the ph balance of the body and will strengthen the immune support system. Going natural is no longer a Euell Gibbons thing; we now know that helping the body heal with natural support leaves fewer side effects and quicker healing time!
